Kindergarten

Creativity and curiosity

One of the most important things you can provide in an early childhood program is the opportunity to be creative, with materials that foster creativity, imagination and curiosity.  Frances Durham, who became an incredibly influential art teacher of her time, emphasised the importance of open-ended materials, and the process of a child creating, rather than what the child makes.  Her work was inspiring and still today, shapes how we view a child's artistic growth and development.

The Reggio Emilia philosophy developed by Loris Malaguzzi, celebrates art through the '100 languages' of a child.  Through these 100 languages of expression and representation, children have the opportunity to collaborate, to realise new perspectives and deepen their relationship with themselves and with each other.

This week in kinder we have been exploring the smells, sights and sounds of food through art, making new discoveries and considering new perspectives.
