EdConnect Australia Volunteers

Caroline Hart

Student Wellbeing Coordinator

EdConnect Australia is an inter-generational, nation-wide organisation which connects trained and screened volunteers with young people in schools who might need additional support or guidance.

Brunswick Secondary College is one of 10 schools in the Moreland area that currently has a number of volunteers providing extra support in the areas of Maths, Science and Literacy.

An example of the work our EdConnect Volunteers do can be seen on the next page - 'getting creative'.

I am a qualified secondary English and History teacher and am undertaking my PhD at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education Youth Research Centre. My PhD is about tertiary education and mental health, focusing specifically on help-seeking and student support. I also teach and lecture at Melbourne University in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education in subjects relating to gender, ethics and young people.

In my volunteer capacity at BSC I will be assisting with Humanities subjects, especially social studies and history, as (fun fact!) I also did my teacher training at Brunswick Secondary College in both of these subjects.

I am interested in art, creative writing, gender and equity issues as well as student wellbeing. I am enjoying my return to this vibrant school community!

I am passionate about various subjects including English, Chinese, Mathematics, Geography, History and especially Global Politics.

I learn about the needs of each individual student and build a lesson plan based on these needs. In addition, I provide one-on-one tuition to students across Victoria in the above-mentioned subjects.

Every child is gifted and I keep that in mind when I teach, coach and mentor every young mind. I believe that student-centred learning is essential when educating individuals for the future.

At BSC I am working to help Year 7 and 8 students overcome difficulties in literacy and numeracy.

I look forward to helping every young mind soar!

See an example of Stallone's mentor projects on the next page  'getting creative'.

Since moving from the UK in 2015 I worked part time for RMIT University as a research assistant and Melbourne Business School as a teaching assistant for a Masters course. For the last year, I have been working at the University of Melbourne, School of Population and Global Health as a research assistant. My background is in Mathematics; I hold a BSc in Pure Mathematics and a MSc in Operational Research and Applied Statistics (which is basically applied maths), and I plan on beginning a PhD next year. I  enjoy math problems, and in particular the mathematical modelling of health related problems. I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer at BSC; I hope that my time spent here will be beneficial for both the students and the staff and I hope that my example will encourage girls to pursue careers in STEM.

Originally from the UK,  I consider myself lucky to have called Melbourne home for nearly a decade. In my spare time I spend read books or enjoy the outdoors - cycling, mountain biking, playing soccer, rock climbing and walking my Boxer dog. Since graduating from university in 2005, I have worked in television production, advertising, public relations and, for the past seven years, educational publishing. In my current job, I work with educators to create resources for secondary schools throughout Australia. I look forward to spending some time away from the office, learning a bit more about day-to-day life in a school, and assisting students and teachers where I may be most useful.

I am an engineer from Brazil.

I  am willing to help students with subjects such as maths, physics, chemistry and geography as well as food studies, sports and arts.

Initially, my main focus is on assisting Ms Michael, Mr Stringer and Mr Lutwyche with the VERY popular Maths Help Cocurricular Program (Monday afternoons from 3:30pm to 4:20pm).

Everybody is more than welcome to come and ask for a hand with maths and I look forward to seeing you there!

I am a PhD student at La Trobe University. I did my undergraduate study in Biochemistry and Biomedical Science and now my research is in Muscle Biochemistry. My research focuses on testing and understanding new drugs to treat a range of muscle wasting conditions, such as injury and ageing.

I volunteer in the Year 10 Science class on Monday mornings and also work at Latrobe University as a lab demonstrator for undergraduate students. I am passionate about science communication and hope to give students some insight into what it's like to study and work in science.
