Six Ways to Motivate Your Child to Read

  1. Read what you love: There's something to read for everybody, and your child will love reading more if they're reading about a topic that they like. Whether they love sport, magic, solving mysteries, stories about other children, true stories, animals or adventures - there's a book for that.
  2. Books everywhere: Keep books around the house and the classroom so it's easy for your child to pick up a book and read at any time.
  3. Visit the library: Make visiting the library a special, fun time with children where they are exposed to books and reading.
  4. Stop for reading time: Make time in your child's schedule at the end of the day to relax in a comfortable, calm space and read. Try to do it every day so it becomes part of your daily routine.
  5. Turn reading time into showtime: When you're reading aloud to children, get creative. Read in funny voices, make sound effects and encourage audience participation: ask what they think will happen next, ask their opinions and talk about new words. Encourage your child to read together with or to you so they can join in the fun.
  6. Be a reading champion: Young people learn from watching you, so make reading and a love of books part of your life too.

Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge 2020

It's great to see that some of our students have already read a number of books for the reading challenge. Congratulations to Anara (Year 6) who has completed the challenge.

Libraries are currently closed but there are other options available in order for your child to read books

  1. Read books you already have at home
  2. Glen Eira Council libraries have free e-books available online
  3. Some companies are offering free subscriptions during the COVID-19 shutdown period
  4. Share a book with a special relative or friend via an online chat using Skype, Google Meet, Zoom, etc.

If your child has lost their  reading challenge login details please request them from their classroom teacher or the school office. The reading challenge ends on 4th September 2020.
