This term we have been discovering many different units of measurement in mathematics including time, length, perimeter and mass.
This week we have been revising time using analogue and digital clocks. Students began by revisiting time to the half hour and then moved in quarter past and quarter to.
Students have used informal units such as counters and unifix blocks to measure length, then moved to rulers and tape measures to formally measure length and perimeter using centimeters and meters.
The students had a fabulous time measuring lines on the basketball court using trundle wheels. Did you know our basketball court is 28.5 meters long?
We then began measuring mass using balance scales in small groups. Students used uniform informal units such as pencils or counters to measure mass.
This term our Inquiry unit is 'Land and Sky'. During this unit students will investigate the changes that occur in the sky (including night and day) and why these changes occur. We had an exciting Incursion on Friday 28th October that further explored the topic. A large inflatable planetarium within the gym gave us the opportunity to observe the night sky and learn about our weather and the rotation of the Earth.
Take Home Readers and Spelling Books
As part of InitiaLit-2, students have free-choice of short and extended chapter books to take home and read. Year Two students are able to choose readers from school to take home and read nightly. Students in Year Two are also free to choose books from home to read each night if they wish. Students who choose their readers on a Monday are required to return them the following Monday. After reading, please record the name of the book and the length of time reading in the student diary for the day.
InitiaLit-2 suggests students practice spelling words at home each week. These spelling words will reinforce the words used in the classroom program. Instructions for the Spelling book are on the front cover of the Spelling book.
Tissues
Thank you to those families that have sent along a box of tissues to be used in your child's classroom. We would love for you to consider sending one in if you are yet to do so.
SPECIALIST TIMETABLE
Please note the following information regarding the days that each grade has specialist classes. * These times are subject to change during school-wide events (eg: swimming timetables) *
