TERM 4 MATHS IN FOUNDATION

Throughout Term 4,  the Foundation students have investigated and explored a variety of maths concepts.

They have learned about odd or even numbers and that an even number is a number that can be divided into two equal groups. An odd number is a number that cannot be divided into two equal groups. Students also learned that numbers that end in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are odd and 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 are even regardless of how many digits are in that number. They consolidated their knowledge by creating odd and even monsters.

The Foundation students have learned how to collect and organise data, interpret data and create a picture graph using their collected data. Student’s came up with their own yes or no question to ask their classmates and collected the data using tally marks, they then had the opportunity to create their own graph using this data. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their own graph using their own packet of coloured skittles and investigated which colour was the most common in their packet.

We have also been investigating how to compare the weight of two different objects. Students used the balance scales to assist them when weighing different materials to compare and measure the weight of a variety of objects.

The students have been expanding their ability and knowledge when completing addition and subtraction equations through a variety of hands-on and engaging activities. They played subtraction games with their Buddies, created Subtraction Monsters and completed Monster Subtraction games. The students practiced writing subtraction stories and then modelled their subtraction story with drawings and unifix. They then wrote a matching equation using mathematical symbols and numbers.

HEALESVILLE SANCTUARY

On Tuesday the Foundation students attended their much anticipated excursion to Healesville Sanctuary. It was a beautiful sunny day and the children had a fantastic time. We began the excursion with a snack and then Liam, our instructor, took us on a guided tour through the enclosures of the Kangaroo’s, Wallaby’s, the Helmeted Honeyeater and the Orange Bellied Parrot. We looked at each animal's habitat and discussed their life cycle and what they need to survive.

We then attended the amazing bird show ‘Spirits of the Sky’. The children loved seeing all the birds swooping low over their heads around the arena. They saw the Black-Breasted Buzzard crack open an emu egg with a rock, a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, a Major Mitchell Cockatoo, the endangered Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, a Barking Owl and other colourful parrots. And last but not least, the extremely impressive and huge Wedge Tailed Eagle!

We then sat down for a well deserved rest and lunch break before heading off in groups to explore the rest of the sanctuary before boarding the bus for home.

SHOE BOXES STILL WANTED!

To demonstrate their understanding of what living things need to survive, we will be asking students to construct a habitat for an animal of their choosing, using a shoe box. In order to do this, we need your help - if you have any shoe boxes that you could donate, it would be much appreciated!
