What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:

Over the past few weeks, the Foundation Students have focused on enhancing and finalising their confidence with the two-handed strike technique, whilst also beginning our next unit on dribbling.

The students used both pool noodles and tennis racquets to develop an understanding of the different style of swings required when trying to strike an object with two-hands. They worked together in small groups to practise these techniques and then applied them to small activities. It was great to see their level of skill increase over the course of the unit.

Our next unit of learning is based around dribbling and passing. The students were provided with the opportunity to freely explore which hand they prefer to dribble the ball with and then utilise this in small games such as giants treasure. We then moved on to practising two different styles of passes, the Chest and Bounce Pass. This was achieved through stationed activities and in group work.

Year One/Two:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 1 and 2 students have focused on finishing off their unit around striking. In the last week of the unit, students were provided with the opportunity to practise both styles of striking (one-hand and two-handed). This was achieved through group work and small based activities such as hit the wall. The Level 2 students learning was extended to incorporate the game Badminton, whereby students were exposed to the skills required to hit the shuttlecock with a smaller racquet head and one hand.

The Level 1 students began their unit on dribbling which focused on exploring which hand they prefer to dribble a basketball with. We also played some games like Popcorn which focused on controlling the basketball while moving around the gym.

The Level 2 students began their unit on throwing which constituted the game Ultimate Frisbee. In their first lesson, they developed the necessary skills to allow them to progress to small team games. These skills were throwing techniques, crocodile and crab catching and throwing and catching while in motion.

Year Three/Four:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 3 & 4 students have participated in a three-week Ultimate Frisbee program which has been delivered by Gecko Sports. These programs are possible because of the successful grants we receive through Sporting Schools.

The first session saw each student learn the required skills and techniques which would allow them to participate in a match-play game. The learned skills comprised of throwing the frisbee accurately, catching it with either the Crocodile or Crab grip and teamwork. It was fantastic to see how well the students progressed from their first lesson to their second in such a short amount time which moved towards playing a modified game of Ultimate Frisbee. The intention of this was to allow the students to apply the learned skills to real game scenarios. We still have one more week of the program to be delivered.
