Learning in S33

Mr James

Senior School S33 James is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

S33 had an exciting week last week.

The class camera is continuing to be used, with many great photos taken by the students. So many amazing moments in time were captured.  Each morning there are so many eager hands that go up asking for it to be their turn, or if they can have a 2nd/3rd time as the photographer for the day.  Whilst there may be some blurry shots, the creativity that they are showing is a testament to the work of the Media Arts team; and the different equipment that they get to learn how to use when in Media Arts.

On Wednesday the 16th of November, the class started the day with Math Games, such as Fraction Golf, Shape Bump Games, and Money Money Money. This start enabled the class to:

  • Get focused and switched on.
  • Work collaboratively with their chosen partner.
  • Be respectful when working in a classroom where there was lots of chatter and laughter.

This start to the day saw lots of smiling faces and great teamwork in recording their calculations of the problems that arose during the gameplay.

Whilst we were playing these games, the class was aware that next door S34 had a special guest for an incursion; and that we were going to be next.

After some packing up, a bit of cleaning, and some moving of the furniture, we were ready for our turn. The St Johns Ambulance volunteers had been seen all week going into classrooms, our room was eager and excited for their turn.

Our instructor, Charlotte was absolutely amazing and had the class not only laughing, but learning about first aid and the important principles and practices that are a part of it. It was really enjoyable being able to take a step back from teaching and observe the cohort; and how much fun they were having with the instructor.

Learning about how to assess a patient, how to check for dangers, and what to do at each step took me back to Surf Life Saving and Nippers.  Learning basic first aid techniques can help them cope with an emergency. They learned how to keep a person breathing, reduce their pain or minimise the consequences of injury or sudden illness until an ambulance arrives.

DRSABCD is something all students should learn, as it can be the difference between a happy or a sad story.

Observing the class as they got to practice CPR was marvelous, it really was one of those moments in time when I was glad I had my camera on hand as well.

I’m really proud of how they displayed the 3Rs:

  • They respected their instructor Charlotte and their classmates as they all had a turn.
  • They kept trying, even after making some mistakes, showing the resilience required to be active learners.
  • They were responsible for their actions and demonstrated those wonderful skills that indicate that so many of them are ready to lead the school as Grade 6 students next year.
