Vermont Secondary College

Congratulations to the Year 7 Girls Softball team – State Champions!

In first term, our team was really learning the basics of how to play softball. However, the girls were willing to commit to focusing at training and improving their skills and as a result they have now won two games at district level, four matches at regional level and four games at the State finals to win the title.

On Thursday November 10, at Waverley Softball Association in Jells Park the team defeated:

Elizabeth Murdoch SC – 17-14

Melbourne Girls C – 23-3

Brighton SC -21-4

Balwyn High – 18-2

We improved with each game we played, minimising errors, and starting to take some great catches. Our final game was the best display of batting the team had produced, surprising their opposition and even their own coaches. There was a lot of excited Year 7 students as we returned to school proudly wearing their blue ribbon state champion medals.

Congratulations to all team members: Olivia M, Grace F, Amber S, Pearl J, Amelie T, Parneet B, Rhea M, Gemma J, Naz E, Jayde E, Emily A.

A win like this does not happen without support from a team of people. Ms Malander and Mr Gillespie have been amazing organising equipment and buses and letting us know about last minute fixture changes. Our four student coaches, Maggie D, Georgia H, Maddi P and Rituja T were all extremely organised running drills at training, scoring and as first base coaches. Maddi W, a former VSC student and state softball champion herself, helped coach the team at regional and state finals, including umpiring a match when the official umpire was not present. Mr Malpeil and Mr Gillespie generously gave up their time to run training when I could not be present in the week before the final. Finally, thank you also to parents Penny and John Middenway for supporting the team at the state finals, taking lots of photos and picking up much needed icy poles for the team in the hot and humid conditions!
