Remembrance Day

On Friday the 11th of November the school held a ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day. All staff and students were very respectful during the ceremony and I thank the students who assisted by laying the wreath, raising the flags and reading the poems as part of the service. I wish to make a special mention of Jed Garcia and Violeta Thodori who read the readings and outlined to our school community what Remembrance Day means for our country during the service. They did an amazing job.

Lest we forget.

International Men’s Day

International Men’s day will be celebrated at Lalor Secondary College on Friday the 18th of November. This occasion celebrates boys' and men's lives, achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to nation, union, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare. The broader and ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic awareness towards men's issues.

Many people also use the day to highlight some of the key social issues that men and boys around the world face. In Australia, these “men’s issues” include the fact that:

  • 3 out of 4 suicides are men
  • 2 out of 3 violent deaths are men
  • Men die 6 years younger than women on average
  • Boys under perform girls at every stage of education
  • Dads who want to be more involved in their children’s lives face a range of barriers

Despite the overwhelming evidence that men and boys face a range of issues related to their physical, mental and social health and welling, many people still persist in promoting a range rigid gender stereotypes and clichés like:

  • “Man Up”
  • “Boys don’t cry”
  • “Men and boys don’t need help” and
  • “Every day is International Men’s Day

The reasons listed above are why everyone should celebrate international Men’s Day. I hope this creates discussion and raises awareness of the issues our boys and men face in 2022 - #MAKETIME4MATES
