From the Science Lab

Sherryl Crouch - Science Specialist

Last week students from Year 3 to Year 6 took part in the Case of Discovery forensic science in-school activity. Students were introduced to the crime scene where the victim had been attacked on his boat at a marina. There was also a second crime – they needed to find out who stole the gold and coins. Students were keen to collect evidence to solve both crimes. They collected impression evidence to try to identify missing coins, did toxicology testing to find out what poison had made the victim sick and how the poison was administered, used a digital microscope to collect more evidence, and practiced collecting samples of their own fingerprints. They also had fun DNA profiling the suspect and used ultraviolet light to gather more clues written in invisible ink. The twist in this crime was that the original victim was the person who stole the gold and coins. The final puzzle was to crack the code to open the safe and recover the stolen goods.

All students had fun using their detective skills.
