SUBMERGED: stories of Australia’s shipwrecks

Have you had a look at this display from the Australian National Maritime Museum, highlighting shipwrecks of national, regional and local importance? You might already know about the Admella, shipwrecked at Carpenters Rocks, but there are plenty of other Aussie shipwrecks to explore, as Australia has over 11,000 shipwrecks – that’s roughly one wreck for every three kilometres of coastline. Submerged is presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Maritime Museums Council and is the result of a national project with workshops held across the country to develop the exhibition and to source shipwreck stories. Sixty eight shipwreck stories were nominated by 46 maritime museums and heritage institutions from around Australia with 14 of the most compelling stories selected to feature in the exhibition. Submerged – Stories of Australia’s Shipwrecks will be on display in the courtyard (behind the meeting room, near the returns chute) at Edenhope Library until 22 September.

RIPPER READER: Help Around the House by Morris Gleitzman – A borrower got this for her grandson: ‘It was about a new parliamentarian there to do good, the public servant trying to make sure he did what he was told and didn’t make waves, and his enthusiastic Scout son who took his promise very seriously. This included finding homeless people (who don’t exist in Canberra, he was told) to give Anzac biscuits, and refusing to tell a lie – for the common good of the government anyway. I decided Charlie, who is only 9, would enjoy bit more in a year or two, but I did.’
