From the Head of Sport

This is our final newsletter for the term and we would like to take this opportunity to thank every student and their families for their support through an enormous and exhausting term of sport. Despite the frustrating finish to our football, rugby and chess seasons we can look back and be grateful for the number of opportunities our boys had to play sport. Our students were very fortunate to compete in the sports of basketball, tennis, football, rugby union, chess, hockey, train for track and field and swimming, and also compete in the AIC cross country championships, where we won for the third year in a row. We should think back on these opportunities we were given and be thankful.

It is hard to look back and use the word “premiership” in a season where a sense of finality was taken from us. That would not be humble of us to assume success was guaranteed or deserved. Instead, we choose to celebrate the success of our teams across the season and congratulate the __ teams who made it to their grand finals. We have no idea what the final results would have been, but we are proud of the performance of so many teams across the season and have no doubt they would have finished their seasons off by playing their best.

We would also like to thank the entire community for the support shown on Saturdays throughout this term. The final round of sport against Padua College, where nearly all teams were able to play at home was a rare occasion for us to all be together. It is something we look forward to returning in 2021.

In a season with many highlights our 1st XI and 1st XV teams led by example. As teams who completely dominated their opposition and who have done so for many years they deserved any success that came there way. It is important to recognise that without the dedication of our coaching staff over a long period of time, achievements like this cannot occur. The efforts of 1st XI coaches Jamie Morgan and assistant coach Corey Lucas, 1st XV coaches Brendan Kiernan, Ty Casey and Jon Fitzgerald, in collaboration with our Head Strength and Conditioning coach Simon Price has resulted in the fantastic performances of these teams for our College.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all families the very best for a relaxing September holiday. After a long but enjoyable term of sport, it is important to thank all of our families, students, staff and community members for the efforts they have put in to provide opportunities for our students. A well-earned rest is needed for all our students, EXCEPT THOSE IN TRACK & FIELD (😊) so please enjoy the break!

TERM 4 SPORT

There are three sports now remaining for the year.

  • AIC Track & Field – As the most successful sport at the college in recent years our track and field program will face the tough challenge of having final preparations during the September holidays with the AIC Championships held at the end of Week 1. These boys will do their very best during the break to maintain their fitness and prepare themselves for the big challenges other AIC colleges will present this year.
  • AIC Water Polo – Sunday, November 1. At this stage our AIC Water Polo competition is scheduled to go ahead. Once we have final confirmation next term, Mr Apps will seek expressions of interest from boys to be involved.
  • AIC Golf – Monday, October 26. Mr Fogarty will be seeking expressions of interest in Term 4 for boys to compete at the Golf championships.

TERM 4

Preparation for 2021…wow, already!

During Week 2 in Term 4, we will be having sign on’s for our 2021 sports of AFL, cricket and volleyball. Boys will then be sent information about training and trials that will continue through Week 3 to Week 7.

These Term 1 sports commence on January 30 in 2021 which is the Saturday at the end of Week 1. In previous year’s this has usually a weekend for trials as we settle into the new year but we are now beginning our official competition on this date.  Our Term 4 programs now take on greater meaning with many sports looking to finalise our teams prior to the end of the year.

This information will all be available early next term so stay tuned!

Kind regards,

David Miles
