Introduction

It is the end of Term 3 and we have so much to celebrate, and so much to look forward to! Students, teachers and parents have embraced the challenges of this term so while you’re all looking forward, we also want you to reflect on how far you’ve come!

Many of you will already have participated in 3 way conferences, so you’ve already had a chance to look back over the term and the brilliant ways in which our students have adapted to new ways of learning. Some of you may even be surprised to realise how much you’ve absorbed and grown!

But we would also like to take the opportunity to look forward to:

  • School Holidays
  • Sunshine, warm days, flowers and beach side strolls
  • Exercising outside
  • Zooming with friends and family
  • Term 4 (with a gradual return to onsite learning)
  • Eased restrictions for everyone in Melbourne

But before we say goodbye for the term, here are some things we think our students should be proud of this this week.

Enjoy your holidays and a restful break – we all deserve it. See you in Term 4!

Prep

Preps have been revising and reflecting on their learning. Revision of words of the week (car, king, tray) will help to consolidate these words and the letters/sounds and spelling patterns of these words.

In Maths, “Friends of Ten” has been a fun way to learn these number facts: friends of ten rainbows, a game of snap with card numbers adding up to ten, and colourful dotty snakes have all been part of their learning.

Preps have also revisited “Clever Max”, a story about a dog (who is a bit like Dakota, who visits the Prep classrooms on a regular basis) that they read at the beginning of the year. They then drew a picture in response to the story and wrote about the picture to tell us what they had drawn. The Prep teachers asked parents not to help too much – so this activity was all about the Preps showing us how much they’ve grown.

Grades 1 and 2

Grades 1 and 2 have also been reflecting on their learning – they have been asked questions like:

How did you plan out your day and get started with your work?

What have you learned about how you can manage your concentration?

What have you learned about how you can manage your frustration when you get stuck?

What have you learned about how you can manage your motivation to get your work done to the best of your ability?

How did you know if you were successful in your learning each week?

Across the board, the answers students have given have proven that they have developed healthy strategies to work independently and celebrate their own progress. Bravo!

In Maths, calendars have been the focus as we count down to school holidays and other important events such as birthdays and Halloween.

For inquiry, our budding scientists have become teachers, and have shared their knowledge through videos, posters and diagrams. We definitely feel inspired to try out some of their experiments at home!

Grades 3 and 4

Our middle school students have been working with words all term, producing incredible poems! But this week they have taken words and made them come to life in all kinds of amazing shapes!

Our mathematical whiz-kids have been weighing up the relationship between mass and volume. If you found a grade 3 or 4 raiding your pantry for tins of tuna or boxes of cereal, it was probably to find the weight of household consumables. Or they wanted a snack. Take your pick.

Grades 5 and 6

Grades 5 and 6 have had to plan their time carefully (check out their daily planners below). Between poetry websites, 3 way conferences, business plans (including a “Shark Tank” business pitch challenge), completing various interactive maths puzzles on selected websites, literacy planet activities, and student led conferences (think cooking and origami lessons) they certainly have their hands full. Thank goodness they all get a rest next week!

We visited 5C this week, and we asked them to reflect on their work this term:

Gabriel – Poetry websites, we posted 10 different poems including poetry recitals. We had to be well organised. We worked on that all term!

Nicholas – Something I’m proud of – we’ve been working on our business plan for a while. My idea is making clay items – gifts to give to your grandparents and parents. Most of our business ideas have a special quality. My business is different because it includes rainbow patterns on the items. The business name Clay Co.

Harper H – I’m proud of the business plan. I’m really good with crafty stuff. I picked slime as my product. Crafty and Co is my business name.

Miller – I’m proud of how we have grown as learners and adapted to this new way of doing school.

Miss Craig – I’m proud that each and every student has attended every zoom, and have been doing amazing work.

And we also asked them what they were looking forward to doing over the school holidays:

Harper H - On the holidays I’m going to be going in my pool and annoying my siblings!

Harper S – On the holidays I’m going to be playing with my puppy. She’s a corgi/poodle cross.

Charlie – Keeping in touch with my friends and face timing and going outside.

Maya – On the holidays I’m going to face time my friends and play with my cousins and my dad.

Leni – On the holidays I’m getting a cat, and facetiming friends.

Alexy – On the holidays I’ll probably be playing soccer with my dad and playing iPad games with my brother and we are getting a new dog on Sunday.
