Walk to School

Dear Parents,

We would like to announce that on Friday 6th March 2020, the Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation are conducting a Save Our Sons walk. The purpose of this activity is to increase awareness and raise money for the foundation.

The walk will begin at Chemist Warehouse Fountain Gate shopping Centre at 9am and make its way to Oatlands PS, arriving at the Stuart Daly Gymnasium at 9:30am, ready for a whole school assembly. All members of our Oatlands community are welcome to join.

The day is a Free Dress Day for all students. Children participating in free dress will donate a gold coin to the cause. A presentation will be delivered by the foundation at our assembly at the conclusion of the walk.

We are supporting this cause as we currently have a student at the school who has been diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy, thus making the cause dear to our hearts.

In-case you are unaware of this condition Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy is:

  • An inherited disorder of progressive muscular weakness, typically in boys
  • Treatment can help, but this condition cannot be cured
  • Requires a medical diagnosis
  • Can last for years or be lifelong
  • Many people with Muscular Dystrophy have Duchenne Syndrome
  • Girls can be carriers and mildly affected, but the disease typically affects boys
  • Symptoms include frequent falls, trouble getting up or running, waddling gait, big calves and learning disabilities.

There is no cure, but physiotherapy and medication, such as Corticosteroids, can help control symptoms and improve quality of life.

We hope that all of the Oatlands Community get behind the cause by supporting it on the day and it would be terrific to see families participating in the walk.
