Principal Report

Oatlands from My Point of View

Matthew Kenny – Assistant Principal

The 2020 school year is well and truly in full swing. Week 4 of Term 1 and everyone seems to have made an excellent transition from holiday mode. I have had the opportunity to visit all grades and have been very impressed by how settled and focused our students appear. Overall, we have made a very strong start to the year.

Setting Up For Success

Every grade at Oatlands has been working together to establish the foundations for a successful year of learning. Through a range of activities, students and teachers have been setting goals and expectations, developing classroom rules and values, while also building relationships through a variety of activities aimed to help students and teachers to get to know each other. Keep an eye out for a brochure or flyer, which will provide parents with some specifics on what the children have been up to in their classroom.

Student Leadership

Over the past 3 weeks, many of our Grade 6 students have applied for various student leadership positions. For our School Captain position alone, we had over 80 students apply. I want to congratulate every student that applied for our student leadership positions. It takes great courage to go for a leadership position, so well done. It is always important to remember that we expect all of our students to be leaders at school, whether you have a badge or not. This is especially important for our Grade 6 students to remember.

Swimming Carnival

What a wonderful carnival! Over 200 students from Grades 3 – 6 raced in our swimming carnival at NPAC earlier this term. Every student who competed gave their best effort and the behaviour of all students was outstanding. Thank you to our PE staff for organising a terrifically well run event. Thank you also to all Oatlands staff and our parent volunteers who helped in a variety of roles on the day.

Getting To Know Your Child Meetings

This week most teachers have held Getting to Know Your Child meetings with parents and guardians. From initial reports, these meetings have gone very well. I would like to thank our parent community for taking the time to meet with our teachers.

Looking Forward

Over the next two weeks, our Grade 6s will head down to the Prom for 5 days of fun. Shortly after that, our Grade 5s are off to Camp Rumbug, where they will enjoy a wide range of activities such as, canoeing, giant swing, flying fox and the ropes course. I wish the Grade 5s and 6s all the very best. Also coming up, our district swimmers, who are currently training very hard, will represent Oatlands in our District Swimming Carnival next Friday. I wish them good luck.
