Learning in J41

Junior School J41 Manning is sharing the learning taking place in their class…

CRAZY CHEMICALS IN J41

The Year Two students in J41 have been very excited this term to jump into our unit about Chemical Science!  We have conducted many experiments to discover how materials can change.

J41 have wondered…

  • What makes a solid, liquid and a gas?
  • Does a material always stay in the same state?
  • How can we change materials and why do they change?

You might have spotted us around the school in the last few weeks, exploring answers to these questions and more!

On Monday, 21st October we were lucky enough to have our very own Science Day, complete with the Crazy Chemicals incursion!  The scientist there showed us lots of different ways to experiment with materials, including making slime, firing tiny rockets with vinegar and bi-carb, exploring magnetism, and using UV light from the Sun to make Solar Prints.

A major part of our learning has been around using the scientific method.  We ask ourselves a question, create an experiment to find out, make predictions (hypotheses), observations and find out answers.

VINEGAR AND BI-CARB EXPERIMENT

We wondered…

Jasper: "How do scientists make an explosion?"

Jackson: "What happens when we put vinegar and bi-carb soda together?"

Alex: "How do you make gas?"

Dean: "What happens if we mix powder and a liquid?"

We hypothesised…

Eden: "I think that I might make an explosion of a bubbly,

fluffy gas."

Daniel: "I think it is going to blow up."

Ash K: "I think it is going to explode."

We observed…

Dean: "When Billy and Dean were partners, we put in so much vinegar and it exploded everywhere.  It was so cool when it overflowed like a volcano."

Harper: "Firstly when we put the baking soda to the vinegar it made a big, soapy bath bomb.  Secondly, when Ms Schollar put the vinegar in, it spread all over the grass.  Then when Ms Schollar put some more in, it spread all over the grass again."
