Grade 3 Reflections on Semester One

The following students were asked to reflect on their learning over the first half of the year. They then presented at the end of term, year three assembly. This is what they said:

Jonah 3B – “This semester I liked maths, especially times tables because of the groups and how we did it. I learnt that 5 x 4 is the same as five groups of four. When I did times tables I felt excited to do something new – to learn you need to use your maths strategies.”

Marimar  3B – “This term I thought making bar graphs was fun. We loved making bar graphs because we got to draw columns, write numbers on the side and colour them in. I learnt that there are different types of graphs and I felt happy.”

Tyler 3C – “This semester we have been doing some arts and crafts to make our PBL project, for example, our Game of Life board game. One thing I learnt is it takes a lot of patience and practice to do arts and crafts.”

Christian 3D – “This semester I thought doing explorers in PBL was fun because we learnt more and more about our explorers. Some people did PowerPoints, some did posters and some did flip books. My group and I did the explorer Charles Sturt. We learnt that he sailed on the Murray River. I felt excited because we could find cool information and cool pictures.”

Jett 3A – “This semester I thought the sports carnival was fun because we did lots of fun activities. We got ribbons if you came first, second, third and fourth. You had to try hard to get ribbons. There was long jump, triple jump, high jump. 200 metres run, discus, chicken throw, 400 metres run, shot put and sack run.”

Ahmed 3E – “This term we have been learning about tennis. Tennis is a great sport which teaches us lots of lessons. Firstly, I have learned that you lose only when you give up so never give up. Secondly, it will make your body active and healthy. You also learn sportsmanship and become a better person.”

Jasmine 3D – “This semester I thought digital technology was fun. We have been learning how to control robots called Spheros. We make them move in different shapes and in different times. One thing I learnt is how to code Spheros. I feel like learning new things helps us to be greater in the future.”

Class work

Students have worked very hard during term 2. Here are some highlights that students wanted to share in the newsletter.

Murat – We have been doing summarising. It has been fun because it was interesting to me. PBL has been good because we have been using Minecraft to build the Gold Rush.

Emanuel – We are learning to define a summary. We have focused on success criteria and knowing what it is. Our PBL project has been the highlight.

Ramsey – My highlight has been PBL. We are building the Gold Rush and what it was like back then. We have learnt how to write letters. We know how they are sent and how to write a formal and informal email and letter.

Have a fantastic mid-year holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone in Term 3.

Camp Rumbug

The grade 5’s ventured off on a 2 and a half hour bus ride down the South Gippsland Hwy to Foster North to camp Rumbug. We stopped off at Koo Wee Rup for some lunch before arriving at camp.

When we arrived we could sense the excitement in the air. The students carried their bags to the ‘Green House’ and were sorted into cabins.

Students participated in 2 activities on the first day. Most came back to the campsite muddy and wet due to the Mud Run and the Raft Building activities.

When they got back to the campsite it was time to shower and get ready for dinner. Dinner on the first night was schnitzel, salad, soup and strawberry mousse.

After dinner the students got ready for a campfire. Once there the students toasted some marshmallows, listened to and acted out some stories and learnt some catchy new songs. Students then headed back to camp, got ready for bed and went into their cabins.

Students were up nice and early, breakfast was served at 7:30 and students were ready by 8:30 for their first activity. Students spent the day completing a range of activities with their groups.

The activities that the students completed during camp were:

  • Mud run
  • Raft building
  • Initiative games
  • Disco
  • Movie
  • Camp fire
  • Flying fox
  • Giant swing
  • Orienteering courses
  • Team challenges
  • Trust activities

Thursday night was all about the disco and movie. Students got their boogie on followed by a relaxing movie before bed. Everyone was exhausted and fell asleep pretty quickly.

Students woke up early on Friday morning and completed their last 2 activities. We packed the bus, thanked the staff and headed on our way back to school. We stopped off for lunch again at Koo Wee Rup and had a delicious roll and had a bit of a play on the playground before leaving.

Students arrived back at school around 2:30pm and headed home to catch up on some sleep.

A massive thanks goes out to Mr Meissner for all his organisation and all staff that attended to help make camp a wonderful experience for students.

Special Note: The camp Rumbug staff said that our students were the most well-mannered and polite bunch of students they have had attend the camp so you should all be super proud of your child/children.

Here is some of the students thoughts on their camp experience:

Year 5 camp was amazing, there were so many activities so we were never bored. One of my favourite activities was the giant swing.

Johnathan 5E

The cabins were warm and cosy and the food was delicious. There were plenty of hills to walk up and down but it was worth it because there were some amazing views.

Louizeana 5E

I enjoyed learning new campfire songs and the disco. The flying fox was scary but I really loved it. I also liked that we got to watch a movie in our pjs. I learnt how to tie new knots that were helpful in the team, challenges. I had so much fun at camp Rumbug.

Year 6 News

Term Two has been very busy in Year 6 and we have been working hard in all subject areas and completing some collaborative projects along the way!

In Maths we completed a Data project in which we surveyed Year 5 and 6 students about their families migration history and graphed and analysed this data using bar and column graphs.

But the projects didn’t stop there, in Health we were looking at the importance of health and wellbeing services within our community and identified some key demographics that were in real need of services. We went to work creating a health and wellbeing program that could be implemented into the Caroline Springs area, some of these genius ideas included:

  • ‘GoGoElderlys’ an Uber style service aimed to help over 70’s get to their appointments safely whist notifying their family of pick up and drop off.
  • An unemployment skills program that was aimed at helping people obtain the skills they need to gain employment including tech skills, cooking skills and teaching skills.
  • Fun Club for disabled kids and their families which gives children living with disabilities a social outlet for them to compete in friendly competition.

In English we have been working to develop our knowledge of instructional texts including procedures and explanations and applying this understanding of the language and structural features to create a hybrid text for a brand new or improved game. We are looking forward to playing some of these soon!

PBL has been all about migration and its impact on Australia. We have been speaking with and researching many migrants including sports personalities, authors, family members and even teachers. This research was used to create a migrant profile and living exhibit at our Migration Museum in Motion!

Year 6 Team

Hi everyone,

During Term 3 in Year Six, we’ve been learning a lot of new things and have been improving in most of our subjects. We are working on new projects that most students and teachers are really looking forward to.

In English, we have been reading a class novel called, ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, which a lot of students are interested in. This term in reading we have been focusing on mostly making predictions. Other than that we have also used other strategies to make us better readers such as summarising, synthesising, asking questions and clarifying. We are also going to have Literature Circle/Book club sessions this term and are continuing to learn the roles that we each need in book clubs. In writing, we are going to start diary entry narratives. But before that we are learning how to write descriptively so that way our writing piece will be much more creative.

In maths, we are learning about operations which are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in whole and decimal numbers. We have been using learning centres to share our understanding of operations with one another which always helps us improve.

In PBL, we are working on a project based on natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, global warming, volcano eruptions and many more. We have been separated into groups to work on one specific natural disaster and are trying to figure out how to design a structure/building that can withstand natural disasters.

This term, we are having a new specialist added to our timetable which is art. During art, we are improving on our creativity skills and what we can do to improve on it even more!

On Friday, we had an excursion about our PBL topic (natural disasters) at Lakeview. We watched a documentary related to this topic and learnt a lot of new information to help us in our PBL project. We had a trivia (quiz) about the documentary we watched. It was very interesting and informative.
