HoL Programs

HoL Cafe News

HoL Café students have been refining their coffee making and customer service skills, trying new recipes and working on time management to ensure our products are available for all of our customers at the start of lunch. The installation of a café phone has added a new dimension to our customer service dynamic and the students have been having fun getting to know how to answer the phone and take orders. A fellow teacher coined the name Brookside Eats and we think it suits us perfectly.

Four of our café students, Isabella, Leah, Mikayla and Scout, attended the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on June 25 to assist in the catering of a horticultural and agricultural trade show with SAKG teacher, Mylinh Crossman. This is such a wonderful opportunity for these most deserving students and we eagerly await their news on how everything went on the day. We all wish them all well and the best of luck.

HoL Trade have been working tirelessly on a vegetable garden for the Café. The site was prepared, levelled and holes dug to accommodate the garden beds. The beds have been made and installed and now all that is left is the beds to be filled with soil, seeds planted and the area to be covered with a rock topping to allow access to the garden on those famous Caroline Springs wet muddy days. Working together on this project has allowed the students to focus on teamwork, leadership and occupational safety.  The students have done an extremely professional job and each of them should each be proud of their contributions. Can’t wait to harvest our first crop when it is ready.

HoL Tech have been having a ball learning about everything technology. The students have been busy creating websites for the each of the HoL programs. Coding robots and making them move around has been an immense source of entertainment and wonder for the students and providing a very hands on approach to learning about robotics, something that will be more prevalent in our society in the future.

Hands on Learning celebrated its 20th birthday with a conference held at the Frankston Arts Centre on Monday June 17. Frankston is the birthplace of the HoL program, and it was an honour to celebrate this milestone there. Rev Tim Costello spoke with fellow founding member, Russell Kerr, about their experiences at school, the very first project they worked on and how so many students have benefited from the program as students and how they continue to benefit today as adults.

Our very own Seral Femhi and Robert Stojkov were recognised for their dedication and commitment by being awarded plaques for 5 years of involvement in the program. If it wasn’t for Seral, Rob, their dedicated team of staff and volunteers and the support from the school’s leadership, the Brookside College Hands On Learning Program would not be the success it is today and our students would not have the opportunity to participate and benefit from such a worthwhile program.

HOL- Hort Connections 2019 Excursion

On Tuesday the 25th of June 2019, we were offered the opportunity to cook and serve food on behalf of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens Program at the Hort Connections 2019 at The Melbourne Exhibitions and Convention Centre. It was a showcase for all the agricultural and horticultural representatives. We cooked sweet potato flatbread, broccoli slaw, guacamole and beetroot raita. After we finished cooking we served it to the public.

Our favourite parts were when we met Adam Liaw from Master Chef and he gave us tips on how to cook flat breads. We also enjoyed cooking and seeing people enjoying the food. We got a lot of experience out of this opportunity and we learnt a little bit more about the food industry. In our spare time when we were not cooking or serving food, we visited all the different stores and saw new food industry products.

Special Thanks

We would like to say a huge thank you to Jody Horvat and Maxwell & Williams for their generous donation! These mugs allowed our Junior HoL Trade students to get creative with colour and exercise the character strength of ‘Gratitude’, by giving their decorated mug to someone special to say ‘thank-you for all you do’.
