Student Banking Update

Good news - student banking will recommence from Term 3 at our school.

Senior Subject Information for 2021

Join the adventure and leave the typical behind as we invite our Senior students to THINK BIG! LCS offers a great range of subjects, smaller classes and inspiring teachers.

Term 3 will begin soon and so will our subject information for Years 11 & 12 in 2021.  As we are unable to present this to parents in an evening presentation due to current restrictions, LCS will be sharing subject information to current students in a special presentation during school.  Parents will be able to view this information including some very helpful videos via The Hub & our school Vimeo Channel.

From Monday 10th August, current Year 10 parents will be able to arrange appointments to choose subjects for 2021 with Mrs Fitzallen via the Hub and current Year 11 students can arrange an appointment to choose subjects with Mrs Lake.

PROSPECTIVE FAMILIES will be able to view 2021 subject information via our website, vimeo channel and Facebook from Monday 10th August.  We look forward to sharing more details soon!

Can & Beanie Day for City Mission

Bean’ generous was the goal of this year’s Can and Beanie Day! A ‘food-raising’ initiative of the LCS SRC. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank our generous families for their donations and we know that the most vulnerable in our community will be blessed by your generosity.

We are happy to announce that the LCS most generous ‘HOUSE’ this year was Melaleuca!  Together we collected a total of 1,454 food items.

We also spread some joy by holding a ‘Jelly Bean Jar’ Guess-timation Competition and the winners today were:

Junior School - Orion Beattie

Middle School - Samuel Huett

Senior School - Aaron Kidmas

And laughter was heard spilling out of the PAC at lunch because the SRC hosted a Mr Bean Giggle-a-thon with students able to enjoy escaping the cold while watching some episodes of this hilariously funny show.

The SRC are a group of delightful young people who meet regularly (even when we were working online) to plan how we can bless and serve others.  We have had limited opportunities this year to host events and look forward to being able to plan more fundraisers and fun events next term.

Your 2020 SRC Team members from years 6 to 12 are:

Alex Short, Caitlyn Dean, Catrina Atkinson, Ellie Bissett, Esther Gbasie, Evanna Lichtendonk, Georgia Worthington, Harper Dingemanse, Harrison Gill, James Ferguson, James Turner, Jasmine Poole, Milan Hammond, Sadie Armstrong, Shedrian Buist, Sophie Strating & Thomas Sladden.

Year 11 & 12 Pastoral Care Session

We are thankful to have some normality coming back to school!  Our Year 11 & 12 students recently attended a Pastoral Care Session in PAC where Mr Hill shared about letting our light shine to others based on the Sermon on the Mount.  After some great songs from our Year 12 band, two past LCS students, Thomas and Eloise Ferguson were invited to share about life after school.  Eloise who is currently attending the University of Melbourne encouraged students to get involved with Christian groups as soon as they attend university.  Thomas shared about the GPS conference he attending in Canberra. Our Year 12 students are encouraged to apply for this Australian Christian Lobby conference as one student will be sponsored by our LCS  Board which is exciting!

A BIG thank you to to Thomas & Eloise for coming back to school to share with our students.

King of Kings - LCS Version

Feel like some inspiration? Then view this AWESOME version of King of Kings that our Senior students recently recorded for a school Chapel service. Great talent and great lyrics that encourage us to breathe and remember our Lord God is in control.

Science Competition Updates

The Big Science Competition

During May and June 2020, students from Years 9 and 10 Advanced Science took part in the Australian Science Innovation – Big Science Competition. The competition encompasses an hour long exam on various science related topics. Congratulations to the following students who received awards for the competition:

David Brown – Year 9, High Distinction

Krystof Hempill and Caleb Poole – Year 9, Distinction

Matthew Brown and Zoe Leys – Year 10, Credit

The 2019 Science Olympiads

In August 2019, David and Andrew James competed in the Science Olympiads. This exam is for those students that have competed in the Big Science Competition and performed well. David chose Biology and Andrew chose Physics.

They both performed well, with Andrew receiving a Distinction and David a High Distinction.  David also won a place at the Australian Science Olympiads Summer School in Canberra, where he attended information sessions related to Biology. David was one of only 103 students selected from schools that entered from right across Australia.

Last week, students were finally selected to attend the International Science Olympiads in various venues including Nagasaki Japan in 2021. Unfortunately, David wasn’t one of the 17 chosen, out of 103 students that attended the Australian Summer School, to attend the Biology Olympiads in Nagasaki Japan; but we are very pleased with his great efforts in representing our school and Tasmania in the Australian Science Olympiads in Canberra this year.  Well done to both David and Andrew

The Rite Journey - Update

This year, Year 9 students have been undertaking the Rite Journey, an emotional literacy and well-being program, exploring various topics relating to personal and relational health. The first half of the year has been focused on two guiding questions – “Who am I really?” and “How do I get along with others?”

This term has been challenging as we negotiated the school lockdown and the reintegration of our year 9 students back into familiar rhythms, whilst continuing to explore some key topics relating to body image, gender identity and mindset. We have also undertaken various challenges throughout the year, which are designed to offer opportunities for reflection and personal growth. To celebrate the halfway point of the year, we have been undertaking the Rite Journey Cup, a series of challenges over the final two weeks of the term, encouraging teamwork, resilience, character and rapport.

Moving forward, please continue to uphold the program in prayer as we all engage

whole-heartedly in a way that brings honour and glory to God. Thank you for your continued support for your children’s engagement in the program, and for supporting their teachers as we seek to care and guide them in their responsibility of learning and growing within our Christian community.

From the Wellbeing Unit

Half way through the year! Parents and carers you’ve had to go above and beyond this term. How are you going to care for yourself in the break?

Self-care is essential for survival

Fatigue is more than feeling tired and drowsy. After intense challenges, fatigue is mental and/or physical exhaustion that reduces your ability to perform your role safely and effectively. These 6 months have impacted us in many ways and the fatigue induced by so many changes is not to be taken lightly.  We need to care for ourselves and carve out some time to refresh and recharge.  Consider what will do this for you and make it happen!

Learn to do nothing

One of the drawbacks of modern life is the pressure to drive ourselves to bigger and better heights. A hectic lifestyle is exhausting. Parenting can be exhausting. Give yourself permission to do nothing, to simply relax and hang out – maybe over coffee and chat. Or if you need to be doing, then do what gives you life…gardening, reading, being creative in wool, timber, paint…

 Step Outside / Exercise

Take notice of shape of the clouds, the swaying leaves in the trees, the chirping of the birds, the freshness of the breeze and the warmth of the sun. Focusing on nature and what our senses are saying to us helps to reprioritize ourselves in the grand scheme of things.  Take advantage of the chance to move around. Walk the dog, play basketball, go climbing, stroll, or go for a swim. You can go for a run too, but only if something or someone is chasing you.

Get enough sleep

Many people don’t get the sleep they need during term time. I know it’s cool to brag about your lack of sleep in some circles today, but it’s not healthy. Try going to bed early or sleeping in when you can, and don’t feel guilty about either one. If you’re tired in the middle of the day, take a mini break from chores. You will face them better if you are refreshed.

Turn Off Your Phone and use Social Media in Moderation.

Maybe you use your phone for taking family pictures, or looking up BBQ recipes. That’s fine, but turn it on airplane mode, turn off notifications, log out of your email, (“Email is the gateway drug of work.”) Whatever you have to do to avoid checking your email over a break (however short it may be) do it if you can. If you have an iPhone, you can use the “Do not disturb” feature.

Spend Focused, 1-on-1 Time with Your Spouse / Kids / Special friends

Go on a walk. Take each one out to eat separately. Play a board game (even if you prefer to call them “bored games”). Watch a movie, then discuss it. Ask them what they would like to do and do it with them.

Plan to use whatever break you have …even if it is only a ‘mini’ holiday of a weekend or a single day off …to re-balance your equilibrium and then approach the back to responsibilities time with renewed anticipation. Stay well, practise self-care.
