Term 2 Week 8

Home Learning

English

This week students will complete a variety of writing tasks with a focus on reflection and personal response. This will include; a letter to themselves recording their feelings and events during the home learning period, a comic or news report about a heartwarming 'good news' story, a reflection identifying the power and benefits of the Wellbeing activities during isolation and an activity booklet exploring how individuals have connected with their school and family communities and what they are looking forward to. This is a true primary resource which can document the unique time we have been living through.

This week in reading we are learning to use language features to link and sequence ideas.

For students, being able to identify the sequence of events in a piece of writing is essential for them to gain a clear understanding of what they are reading. Sequencing is an important reading comprehension strategy which allows students to make sense of how events unfold in their reading. In turn, these reading skills will help students in their own writing. It will help them construct a cohesive and sequential text that readers can follow easily.

In Word Study, we are continuing to look at the first two jobs of silent final 'e'.

Job One - 'the silent 'e' at the end of a word, jumps over the consonant to make a vowel say its second sound (its long vowel sound). E.g. bake, hate.

Job Two - the silent final 'e' at the end of the word stops 'u' and 'v' from being at the end of the word. E.g. behave, glue.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra. This week students will be looking at different subtraction strategies. We will be focusing on the jump, split and compensation strategy.  Students will have the opportunity to use playing cards, dice and tape measures in these activities. It is important that the students are confident using these mental strategies before processing to the vertical subtraction algorithm.

Measurement and Geometry.

Location and Transformation: Students will review their understanding of how objects can slide, flip and turn.

They will then begin a new focus which will see them explore symmetry.

Students will also have the opportunity to catch up on various Mathletics tasks, to enable them to consolidate their knowledge and skills across a range of topics introduced to them.

Unit of Inquiry

Students are learning to be historians, identifying the skills they use and building their understanding of how we know about the past. Looking at photographic evidence students will focus on why places change over time. This will promote discussion on the reasons for change. One of the most significant changes is population growth. Through introductory activities the students will understand reasons for population growth and think about the impact it has.

Wellbeing

This week the Wellbeing challenge is for the students to create a visual reflection to represent their remote learning experience.  They will be invited to reflect on the positive and challenging aspects of their experience, new skills they have learned plus any new appreciations or surprises.  Recording your thoughts and feelings can be a great way of supporting mental wellbeing and it is hoped that this reflection helps the students to have a smooth and positive transition back to school.
