Eleni R - Cert III in Allied Health Services (HLT33015)
One of the many VET Courses that students can include as part of their VCE or VCAL Course is the Cert III in Allied Health. This course provides knowledge and skills that can enhance employability prospects in allied health and related sectors including assisting in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry and Speech Therapy. An important component of this course is the 80 hours of work placement that must be completed over the two years of the course.
Year 12 student Eleni is currently in her second year of the Cert III in Allied Health VET in Schools course that she is completing at the Moonee Ponds campus of Kangan TAFE. This requires her to travel each Wednesday to the campus at Moonee Ponds to complete theory and practical classes.
Eleni became aware of this course when a friend’s mother attended the VCAL information evening in 2018. At that time, Eleni was interested in a career in nursing and was considering the VCE pathway. However, opting to do VCAL provided more of an opportunity for her to do a VET course in allied health that will eventually lead her to the double degree in nursing/midwifery. Eleni is particularly pleased with this course because it “wipes a whole year from my course because of the credits.”
After Year 12, Eleni will do a Diploma in Nursing and with the credits she has achieved from the Cert III this course will only take one year for her to complete. Then she is aiming to commence a double degree in Nursing and Midwifery. The exciting news is that having completed a Diploma of Nursing, Eleni will be qualified to work as an enrolled nurse while studying to become a registered nurse. This experience working in a health care environment will be invaluable and certainly an improvement on having a part-time job in retail or hospitality while studying for a degree.
The Cert III in Allied Health can be completed by both VCAL and VCE students and can include scored assessment that contributes to an ATAR. If you would like further information about this course, or any other VET in Schools course, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.
