Foundation and Year 1/2 (including Marie's Year 2)

In our Inquiry unit this term 'Move, Improve, Invent!' students in Foundation to Year 2 are exploring simple machines and how they move. We will be talking about different types of forces such as push and pull, gravity and friction.

After watching the heart-warming, Australian movie 'Paper Planes', about a boy named Dylan who picks up the art of turning a piece of paper into an aerodynamic paper plane, it was time for us to do the same.

Here are the Year 1/2s creating their planes, ensuring they have chosen the best paper size, thickness and design:

Then it was competition time:

The F-2 finalists:

Here is what Joseph had to say about his winning plane:

When I flew my plane, it flew well because the wings were up!

Other comments from the students:

When I flew my plane, I had so much fun even though I didn’t win. Laura

Before we started, I quickly changed my style of aeroplane and I think that helped it go further. Emma

My plane went far because of the wings and the way they were made. Luca

My plane flew far because of the angle I threw it. Rayzon

I changed the wings because I thought it would go higher and further. Georgia

I think my plane had wings that were in a good shape. Viraj

I think my plane was good because at the start I reshaped the wings. Lawrence

My plane was cool and I had fun at the competition. Sharlotte

Next time I will try not to get so excited by the competition and remember to fly the plane properly. Ezra

Year 3 & 4 Students (including Marie's Year 3)

Last week the students were exploring a number of items such as dominoes, tubes, marbles, golf balls and cups to identify which of them moved and how they moved.  The students were then able to combine 3 or 4 items to demonstrate movement. They were then ask to present their findings to their peers, explaining the time of force used.

We were making a contraption so that when we pushed the first domino, all the dominoes would fall and knock the cup down and the ball would roll into the cup. It would sometimes work but not always, because the domino was pushed to hard.

Gail, Massie, Tristan

Our roll this session was to interview everyone and ask them questions about what they had built, and how did it work. We asked the groups to show us how it worked, so we could video it moving? We asked the groups what type of force they were using.

Kaitlin, Kushi, Aleisha.

We were trying to make the ball move and hit the dominoes by using a tilted cylinder and putting the ball in the cylinder and it rolled down and hit the dominoes. The force we used was gravity.  Nirav, Cody

First we made a mouse trap using marbles, dominoes, rulers and a box. We used a tower of blocks to grab the attention of the mouse (student hand) and when the mouse hit the tower the box was meant to fall down and trap the mouse, but it fell backwards and the mouse got away. We were trying to have the boxed pulled (force) down onto the mouse. Next time if we use string we might be able to pull the box down and trap the mouse.

Year 3/4

First Eucharist

On Sunday the 23rd July, 2023 the Year 4’s made their First Eucharist. I was really nervous as I was walking down I was sweating but as I got to my seat I was less nervous because I saw my mum. After I walked down we greeted everyone. Then after 10mins they called our names to receive the bread, when they called out my name ‘’Jasmine’’ I was walking down with my mum, I was sweating dreadfully. When I  received the bread it tasted like cardboard.  Jasmine

The second the host touched my tongue it tasted like an old ice cream cone, which for some reason tasted really good. When I walked up to take the host I felt nervous, but when I ate the host I felt blessed, happy and relieved. The holy bread had the sign of the cross on it and the colour was a type of beige, it was round and it’s wafer, not bread. Roman

Suddenly I found myself opening my mouth to receive the body of Christ to welcome him into my body. The next thing I knew I felt cardboard dissolving in my mouth. It turns out it was the body of Christ. I was a bit mad at myself for thinking the body of Christ was cardboard because that's how I thought it tasted. But it was all worth it because now I’m closer to GOD, Lord Jesus Christ and Blessed Virgin Mary. Gail

Walking through the church, I felt nervous, but I knew that it would be the best moment of my year! Receiving the bread was scary, but I took some deep breaths. After some time it was over and I felt relieved and happy that I have become closer to God! Isabella

On Sunday 23rd of July, 2023 I went to Sacred Heart Church to receive my first Eucharist bread. First, when Kate called my name I was pretty nervous and scared but I calmed myself down and walked up to get the bread, luckily I remembered what I should do, I did a fantastic job! Allie

It was the Eucharist, I was nervous and Adriana is joining us at the Sacred Heart Church for the Eucharist.

We all walked quietly, stood up to sing and then sat down. Then Father said some prayers and after that we did our jobs, some people did some readings and some people helped to bring items to Father. After that we sang the Gift of Love and everyone was clapping.

Finally we received the certificates and said the final blessing. Lauren

Year 5/6

A special shout out to Debbie and Rose-Lee for ensuring that I had a relaxing holiday, knowing that the students in 5/6 would continue their learning journey whilst I was away. Just a few shots from the trip, including a visit to family in County Down, Ireland, near the majestic Mourne Mountains. The first photo is me and my Uncle Sean and Aunty Geraldine, who made me feel so welcome. The second photo is of my darling sister Claire, her husband Pete and my nephew, Frank Fitzpatrick. Special times spent with family.

And the photo below is of Inishkea Island, County Mayo, Ireland, where my great grandfather was born. An incredibly emotional day when you visit the homelands of your ancestors.

So lovely to see your children back at school this week. For those parents who were able to meet with me yesterday, thanks so much for the ongoing support of your child's education. We are extremely fortunate to have the parent community we have at Sacred Heart. The students have set themselves some learning goals which they will work towards achieving this semester. Here's a few...

Yash

I want to improve in my self managing disposition and be a better organised student. My steps are;

  1. I could do things early instead of just waiting it out like getting ready until I go out to play.
  2. I also could push myself to be active and a bit faster in work or anything.
  3. I could try find something fast and easy instead of hard

Zane

Goal 1 ~ I want to get better at multiplication .

Step                                                                                                                                                          When I'm at home I can do the times tables for 5 minutes every day.

I could work out multiplication times tables on the weekends.

I could play the  Hit the Button multiplication game.

Harper

Goal ~ improve in Maths

  1. Practice Multiplication or any other to memorize it.
  2. Put a random question on paper or something and try to remember it.
  3. Practice the one I don’t know and repeat the steps.
