Welcome back to the start of Term 3. I trust that all students and staff who managed to have time off had a good break and are returning well-rested and refreshed. I have returned from my stint over the hill at the WA College Agriculture Narrogin as the HOD Trades. It was an excellent opportunity to be ‘back on the tools’ teaching furniture making and immersing myself in the operations of another Ag College.

Thanks to the students, staff and parents for welcoming me back to Harvey Ag. I look forward to reacquainting myself with the parents/guardians of the College who I had known before and meeting the parents/guardians of the students who commenced this year.

From the beginning of this term, Mr Bill Stewart has returned to his permanent position as Vice Principal at Dalwallinu DHS. I thank Bill for his time at the College. Please do not direct any emails or correspondence to Mr Stewart,  I ask parents/guardians to use the Harvey.Ac@education.wa.edu.au email address when contacting the College with enquires or documentation. These communications will be sent to the relevant staff member. Specific matters requiring the attention of the Vice Principal can be forwarded to Dean.Pfitzner@education.wa.edu.au .

OLNA

Parents and students should be aware and understand that students need to attain a Category 3 for each component of the OLNA as part of the literacy requirements to achieve the WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education). Students who have yet to attain the required category have two opportunities in Years 10, 11, and 12. Once Category 3 has been achieved for a respective component, students do not need to sit that component assessment again.

There are two ‘windows’ that are available to schools this term to enable students who have not attained a Category 3 for a component and still have attempts remaining for this year. To advantage the students and to provide the best opportunity for them to meet the requirements of the OLNA, all students who are required to sit the OLNA will do so during Weeks 8 and 9 as indicated on the College calendar. Specific details will be provided closer to the assessment time. Therefore, the OLNA dates indicated on the College calendar for Weeks 2 and 3 will not occur and have been deferred to later in the term, as indicated above.

Year 12 Students

On Wednesday I took the opportunity to meet with, welcome back and address all Year 12 students at the end of lunch. The following is a summary of the points highlighted to the students:

  • This is the ‘business’ end of the year. There is not long to go and the time will slip by quickly. Attendance each day is important.
  • Official last day for Year 12 Students is Friday 20th October.
  • General students will need to apply and may be eligible to depart as of Friday, 22nd September (last day of Term 3) if they have completed all their course work, VET qualifications for their respective areas and have been cleared by the College.
  • General Extension students will be required to return to Term 4 for the first two weeks and will sit their state-based Mathematics Application Exam on Wednesday, 1st November. Specific details will be provided in the coming weeks.
  • Over the coming weeks I will be meeting with each Year 12 student to discuss their WACE and goals required for the remaining time, as a focus to achieve the best they can.
  • Students will be required to complete various surveys for the school, the Department of Education, and the Australian Government as they leave this stage of their secondary schooling. These will be spaced accordingly throughout the term to provide the students with the best opportunity to provide constructive feedback.
  • Students were encouraged to remain focused, be positive, strive to do their best and help each other to finish their secondary schooling in the most positive and productive manner.

Stay safe, look after each other and have a great weekend!
