School Council

I hope everyone has settled back into the school routine.Unfortunately, due to COVID we have not had to chance to hold any council meetings in person but we have managed to adapt to meetings virtually on WebEx.

The main topics of discussion at the last council meeting in October included:

  • Enrolments for 2021, including class composition and sizes
  • School budget for 2021
  • Parent Contributions for 2021
  • Progress of current grant and funding applications
  • DET Surveys
  • Transitions

Remember the school council is always here to discuss any thoughts or comments you have about the school, please feel free to reach out to us at any time.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNCIL AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

The role of the School Council is to support the Principal in the running of the school. All government schools in Victoria have a School Council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a School Council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. The role of the School Council is to:

  • establish the broad direction and vision within the school's community
  • develop and monitor the school Strategic Plan
  • develop, review and update school policies
  • oversee PFA fundraising and social activities
  • approve annual budgets and monitor expenditure
  • maintain the school grounds and facilities
  • enter into contracts
  • report annually to the school community and DET
  • encourage parent participation in the school

The School Council does not manage the day-to-day running of the school, for example, it does not employ teaching or support staff, decide which classes students are placed in, sort out issues relating to individual teachers, students and/or parents. Such issues are of a management nature and therefore the responsibility of the Principal. School Councillors are not appointed to represent specific interest groups or permit special interests or personal agendas to dominate council business.

Decisions made by the School Council of Launching Place Primary School reflect the best interests of the students and support the core business of the school - teaching, learning and student wellbeing.

School Council Policies

An important part of School Council’s role is the discussion, formulation and approval of Policies which underpin the activities within the school. These Policies are reviewed as part of a regular cycle, or as the need arises. Extensive discussion by the Education Committee, parents and staff ensures all policies are fully reviewed before they return to Council for final approval. Important and current Policies are available for download from the LPPS website.
