Junior School Report

Hello from the Junior School!

It has been fantastic to come back to onsite learning during term 4 at Scoresby Secondary College and see all of our Junior school students return to the classroom for what looks to be a very busy finish to the school year. With everything this year has thrown at them, we in the Junior school team are immensely proud of the students and the mature attitudes they have exhibited since coming back to school this term. Along with that, we have witnessed their ability to transition back into consistent displays of our college values; Integrity, Nurture, Success, Pride, Innovation, Respect and Excellence.  With the end of the year fast approaching, we are by no means slowing down as there is still much left to accomplish including the following important messages:

  • Re-enrolment packs need to be returned to the front office ASAP; without these packs completed and returned, students wishing to begin the school year in 2021 cannot be onsite as an enrolled student, therefore we are asking all families return these forms as soon as possible.

  • Along with re-enrolment packs, your subject selection forms for years 8 and 9 students going into years 9 and 10 are due back ASAP along with payment details, by no later than 11th December to the general office.

  • Uniforms; All students should be in the correct uniform including black leather school shoes, correct socks, summer uniforms for girls, natural hair colour and adhering to our jewellery policy. It is extremely important that our students are following the uniform policy of the college and we ask all families to work with us in ensuring your child / children are organised with the correct uniform/s. Please refer to the school planner for a full and comprehensive list of the uniform requirements if unsure.

A few highlights from our classrooms in the Junior school:

  • The Year 7 Humanities classes have been hard at work on their Ancient Greece presentation in which they will have the opportunity to deliver to their peers in class, the year 8 Humanities classes have been learning about all things related to the Black Death while the year 9s have focused on the events that began WWI.

  • In their Mathematics classes, the year 7 students have been using their knowledge on Real Numbers to build their own Kahoot Quizzes and will be able to present these to their peers and test their understanding on a new topic. The year 9 groups have been constructing clinometers to measure angles. They ventured into the courtyard and measured the height of our tallest trees in the college by measuring the angle of elevation using their clinometer and then applying trigonometry calculations to find the height. This was a successful activity requiring group cooperation.
  • Our year 8 Health classes have had a particular focus on decision-making and harm minimisation around alcohol and smoking which is a unit currently lead and driven by the student. The Year 9 PE cohort have been lucky enough to get out and about in the sun practising their golf putting, some of them have gotten so good they are even talking about challenging both Mr Barnett and Mr Phillips for bragging rights…

  • In Year 8 Science, the students have been learning about physical and chemical changes in science over the last few weeks. They have been representing chemical reactions with word equations and chemical equations and observing chemical changes by carrying out experiments in the lab.

We would like to remind everyone that we have a report writing day coming up on Friday  27 November and students are not required to attend school on this day.  Once again, we would like to extend congratulations to all students and families in the Junior School for their efforts this year and in particular, the last few weeks transitioning back into the classroom. We hope you all keep up and maintain these efforts for the remainder of the term.
