Shadow Judges Enjoy Writers Workshop With Author Danielle Binks

Earlier in the year, students from the school’s Book Club were selected to participate in a prestigious Shadow Judges Program for the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards. The Shadow Judging Team, made up of ten students from our school, have been helping to celebrate the six short-listed novels and have given voice to young Australian readers.  Along with free copies of each of the short-listed books, The CBCA also paid for the panel to participate in a Writing Workshop with an Australian author of their choice. Our panel, and interested Book Club members, had the pleasure of attending a virtual Writers Workshop with Danielle Binks; a writer, reviewer and book blogger. The Workshop took place on Thursday July 30th during remote learning and was a highlight for many of the students. Please see below for Cameron Richards 7J response to the workshop.

First off, it was much a pleasure to have the privilege to have Danielle over to visit us, even virtually!

Danielle was happy to give us an amazing insight into her own life growing up, and how she then became an author. This was an awesome story to get to hear; of what a genuine author would aspire to... to hear such a unique story of the life of Danielle.

We are very thankful for the help that Danielle has given with her interesting approach towards writing, with ideas such as writing based upon a 'stranger comes to town' story or a 'quest' story, she shared her marvellous talent with us and taught us to become extravagant writers.

Many thanks from myself and the shadow judging panel for your presence Miss Binks!

Thank you to our Shadow Judging Team, made up of Tahlia Seath 7J, Siddita Channappagol 7F, Cameron Richards 7J, Cassandra Roberts 9A, Christen Koumi 7J, Chryssa McNeill 7J, Trisha Kumar 8J, Maddisyn Smeaton 8J, Jarrod Newton 11A and Rylee Morgan 11H, for their fantastic contribution to Young Adult Literature.

Sue Murray – Scriptwriting Workshop

Over the course of two days, August 26th and August 27th, several students from four different schools were fortunate enough to participate in a scriptwriting workshop run by famous scriptwriting author Sue Murray. Sue Murray, based in Sydney, has written over twenty books of plays, including well-known Mirror, Mirror and The Formal. During these two days, students were able to refine their writing skills and learn the principles of scriptwriting through enjoyable activities ran and guided by Sue Murray. Some of the activities included writing a practise script about a myth, legend or folktale about the moon, similar to Ms. Murray’s comedic script ‘Full Circle’. This was an excellent activity that got students thinking, sharing ideas, and interacting with one another. Ms. Murray was a fantastic host who managed to turn each and every second of the workshop into an engaging and inspiring event. Students were able to communicate with one another and meet and make new friends. Another positive aspect of the workshop is that not only were the activities enjoyable, but they challenged our thought process and our writing skills, helping to improve them and introducing us to new writing techniques. Overall, the workshop was inspiring, insightful and motivational, and we were able to take away newly-found skills that we all developed during this workshop. We would all like to say a huge thank you to Ms. Green and Ms. Earl. We are all very grateful to them for giving us the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful workshop.
