Remembrance Day

To recognise this special day we have a Remembrance display in the DC. Over the week we read a number of books including “I was only nineteen” by John Schumann, which is based on the famous Australian song and recounts the experience of being drafted for the Vietnam war. The older students read “Lone Pine” by Susie Brown, which is based on a true story of a family with three sons who head off to Turkey to fight at Gallipoli. Only two return. This created much discussion with students, and they reflected on how the mother would feel with her three sons away at war.  Finally with the younger students we read “Reflection - remembering those who serve in war” by Rebecka Sharpe Shelberg, which is a tribute to those who have served our country.

Car activities

To tie in with our “Car display” we have had car races with our own track at lunchtimes in the DC over the past week. This has created much excitement and healthy competition.  We also have had car drawing/colouring happening for those who enjoy quieter pursuits.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Our students are to be congratulated on reading a whopping 9,564 books for the PRC this year.  Students from Year 1-Year 6 will be presented with a certificate to acknowledge this great achievement. Some students read over 100 books - a fantastic effort and they were recognised at assembly this week, and presented with a special badge by Local MP Vicki Ward. Congratulations to - Ethan Giles (2JE), Archer Richards (3LB), Ned Harley (3LB), Evie Hoseason (3TH), Talia Southey (4CR), Finlay Paatsch (5AB), Sabrina Battiato (5AB) and Alex Blokkeerus (6CN).

Each year we have a “class award” for the class which reads the most books for the duration of the Challenge from March-September.  This year the award goes to a very excited 6CN. Well done guys. Your class prize awaits. Enjoy.

Book of the Week

It is hard to believe the 14th book in the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series has just been released. Such is the popularity of this series, that I have had to purchase more copies of The Wrecking Ball to satisfy our thirsty readers.  Jeff Kinney is onto a winning formula. In his latest release the family receive an inheritance which enables the family to make big changes to their house. But they discover home improvement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be!

This week our featured book, published by National Geographic is about “Rocks and fossils”. So many students at SFX have an interest in this area.  This book includes much information about fossils and the latest geographical wonders and is accompanied by over 800 photographs. A great book to scroll through.

End of year procedures

With the end of the school year fast approaching and much maintenance and a stocktake of the DC collection to be undertaken please take note of the following :

Last week of borrowing Wk. 8 Monday 25th November

Last week of lessons Wk. 9 Monday 2nd December

During the school year, I welcome students borrowing over the holidays, and always say to them I would much rather the books be borrowed, than sitting on the shelves locked away in the DC.  However over the Christmas break, books must be returned for stocktaking/checking purposes. I encourage students to visit their local public library to borrow some books to read over the holidays.

Happy reading,

Mrs. Johnson
