YEAR 9 HOT DOCS

As part of the Year 9 Documentary elective, students were asked to enter their films into this year's

ReelOzInd - Australia Indonesia Short Film Competition and Festival. As well as creating their own short documentary they each had the opportunity to apply to be a Youth Judge on the panel.

The film festival is open to schools from all over Australia and Indonesia with applications open to all students.  Out of the 18 youth judges selected from the two countries, Footscray City College saw two of our Year 9’s selected based on their Youth Judge Application Video, Abigail Wong and Ingrid Burkhardt-Wang.  Both students made a 60 second video discussing “How film is an important medium between cultures.” You can find their bios below.

Abigail and Ingrid will be reviewing and judging the films over the next few weeks.  Out of the five documentary film groups in this year’s Hot Docs class who entered, one team have been shortlisted for the finals. Olivia Hector, Brigit Ingram, Emma Kiely, Caitlin Sheard and Millie Beswick-Wright’s documentary Play Like a Girl, will be exhibited at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) Australian Mediatheque from 27 September - 4 October 2017.

Ingrid Burkhardt - Wang is an Australian Year 9 student at Footscray City College. She loves film and media because she finds it is a great way to express opinions and views in a captivating and entertaining way. She also loves the technical and artistic elements of filming and editing that can be achieved with lots of hard work and motivation.

She thinks film is a great medium between cultures because it is a way of communicating ideas, thoughts and feelings across many people. She thinks people can learn a lot from others and their opinions. Even though there are so many different languages, she believes film is a language that can connect everyone. She thinks film can give us an insight into the world around us and the people that live there. If a picture is worth a thousand words, she can only imagine the impact of a video.

Abigail Wong is a year 9 student at Footscray City College. She has a great love of film and media and enjoys watching comedy movies and enjoys good cinematography. She loves to see people's stories put on screen that people can enjoy and still see the deeper meaning behind them. Abigail believes that film is a great medium to communicate through cultures because regardless of language, great writing can convey messages to different people of all backgrounds.

When Abigail was studying media she learnt many new techniques and developed valuable skills which helped her understand and appreciate good writing and cinematography. The part of her movie making experience that she enjoyed most was working with her team to see all their different ideas come together to form one film.
