Grade 6 Snow Trip

On Friday 23 August, the Grade 6 students went to Lake Mountain for a snow day. There was lots of fun had by all the students as they tobogganed down the mountain and enjoyed some snow play.

The day ended with a warm hot chocolate before we got back on the bus and headed home. The Grade 6 snow day is always a highlight for the students each year.

Primary Musical Seussical JR.

This year the Primary students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the musical production of Seussical JR. and they are to be commended for the high standard of their performances.

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and many favorite Dr. Seuss characters sprang to life onstage in the musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

They transported audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus. The Cat in the Hat narrated the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovered a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos. Horton needed to  protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, and he chose to also guard an abandoned egg that had been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.  Although Horton faced ridicule, danger and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never lost faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community were challenged and emerged triumphant!

Year 10 Hospitality Excursion

On Friday 6 September, our Year 10 Hospitality students visited William Angliss Institute of Catering and went on a chocolate indulgence tour led by Mr Abraham.

While they dined at Angliss Restaurant, they critiqued a three-course meal prepared by the William Angliss third-year students. It is a requirement for Hospitality students to visit other hospitality centers and exotic food outlets to enhance their knowledge and skills in the food and beverage industry.

CSEN Athletics

On Tuesday 10 September 50 athletes from Heatherton represented the College at the annual inter-school carnival at Doncaster Athletics track. Students had been preparing for this since the middle of Term 2 during PE lessons and at Friday afterschool training sessions.

Heatherton won all divisions except the U13 girls and claimed the B division title meaning they are elevated to A division next year. We would like to thank Mr Eastman for funding the program with support with track bookings, transport and athletics uniforms. A big thank you to our coaches Ms Suz Sinclair, Miss Sim, Mr Hung, Miss Marshall and parent helpers Mrs Man, Mrs Hart, Mr Diamond, Mrs Hardaker and Mrs Jansen as well as all the parents who came and supported on the day. We would also like to thank Ms Suz's track team for donating starting blocks and extra equipment.

Our focus now shifts to champions and all athletes now need to be training in preparation at a local athletics club to continue improving their personal bests.

2019 Inter-House Athletics Carnival

The annual inter-house athletics carnival was again hosted at Dollamore Reserve on Thursday 15 August. This year saw the addition of electronic timing gates, which enabled student track times to be recorded to one-hundredth of a second. Middle school students had been preparing for this event since the middle of Term 2 and had been training on local athletics tracks as well as working on their field events in regular Physical Education lessons.

Carmel house won the event with Bethel (2nd), Zion (3rd) and Tabor (4th). This event provided an excellent dress rehearsal for the CSEN Interschool Athletics Carnival with students already completing a number of after Friday school training sessions at their base in Moorabbin.

Expression of interest for CSA student trip to the USA

Parents,  I am very excited to let you know that Christian Schools Australia (CSA) is organising a combined student trip to visit the USA in 2020.

CSA will be forming a ‘super team’ of students from either Year 9, 10 or 11 from CSA schools who could partake in a ‘G’Day Space’ program with EWT (Educational World Travel). EWT has teamed up with NASA to create a STEM-based program that combines not only Astronaut Training at NASA’s Kennedy Centre in Orlando, but also some fun and dynamic educational STEM programs in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Some CSA staff will accompany the students on the trip.

On the G’DAY SPACE 10-day program students will experience:

  • A simulated Mars landing
  • Solving engineering challenges
  • Using robotics and defying gravity
  • Working on teamwork, communication and collaboration skills
  • Managing emergencies in the Mars Operation Centre
  • Seeing how chemistry, mathematics and physics apply to the operational functions of a WWII Aircraft Carrier – USS Hornet
  • Exploring the California Academy of Science – the only place on earth to house an aquarium, planetarium and a natural history museum under the one roof
  • Discovering the physics and science of rollercoasters at the Energy in Motion Program at Knott’s Berry Farm
  • Exploring the technology involved in making Blockbuster movies at Universal Studios in Hollywood

As you can see this amazing journey involves not only the Kennedy Space Centres latest program offering – MARS Base 1 and also the ATX Astronaut Training Module – but also a full day to tour the park and lunch with a real NASA astronaut! The students get the chance to learn about the physics behind rollercoasters through a unique STEM program at Knotts Berry Farm in Los Angeles, followed by a day exploring how movies are made at Universal Studios in Hollywood.  In San Francisco students will tour the USS Hornet in San Francisco (a huge old WW2 aircraft carrier) where they take part in the ‘STEM to Stern’ program whereby students learn all about STEM through hands on activities, followed by a morning exploring the California Academy of Science and walking the famous Golden Gate bridge! – EWT

The price for a 2020 departure is $5,995 AUD per person. Students will only need a couple hundred dollars for snacks and souvenirs. Students selected will be able to do some fund raising leading up to the trip, which will take place in early December 2020 (specific dates TBC).

Parents, if you are interested in finding out more about this exciting trip, or to express an interest in your child participating in the trip please email the College office at office@hcc.vic.edu.au.

100km Bike Ride Parent Helpers Needed

As part of the Year of Challenge, each term the students in Year 9 are given a certain challenge to complete. In Term 4 the students are asked to prepare for and participate in the 100km Bike Ride.

For the safety of the students we split the groups on the day (60km target, 80km target and 100km target) and each group is led by a number of leaders. We are asking the school community if anyone is, or knows of someone who is, a capable cyclist and is available to assist on the day. It will be taking place on Friday 18 October.

If you are available and interested in helping out, please email me at christy.marshall@hcc.vic.edu.au.  I will be very pleased to hear from you!  You also must supply a copy of your current ‘Working with Children Check’ to the College office. These challenges run much better when we have a great team behind them.

Nominate a teacher who’s transforming lives

We’re delighted to invite nominations and applications for the 2020 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards.

Our goal is to recognise and reward teachers who transform young students’ lives. Teachers who see education as inspiration, challenges as opportunities and students as pure potential.

Teachers like 2019 award recipient Principal Lorraine Evans of Malak Primary School in Darwin. By refusing to compromise on academic standards and renewing the school’s connections to its community, Lorraine has transformed the fortunes of an under-performing primary school.

This year, we’re looking for 12 more outstanding teachers and school leaders who’ve delivered transformative and measurable outcomes for their students.

The chosen 12 will each receive a $45,000 Teaching Fellowship, which includes $10,000 to support their professional development, $25,000 for a school project to improve outcomes for their students and an overseas visit to a high-performing education system.

If you know an outstanding educator, nominate them now. The value of their work lasts a lifetime, but the chance to recognise and reward them closes on 27 September 2019. Please click below to nominate a teacher who’s transforming lives:

Good luck!
