Celebrating all that is Good with Joy and Gratitude

What a blessing it is to be part of a community that works to create and provide opportunities for students that inspire and engage them in solution focused discussions. Kilbreda girls are regularly involved in a multitude of learning experiences that enable them to demonstrate curiosity and work collaboratively with others. Below are just few examples of the programs that have operated in recent weeks:

  • VCAL Enrichment Day
  • Year 12 Retreat
  • Academy of Enterprising Girls Workshop
  • International Women’s Day Breakfast

Academy of Enterprising Girls

A selected group of Year 8 and Year 9 students participated in an extension workshop ‘The Academy of Enterprising Girls’ last week, Friday 26 February. The Workshop was facilitated by the Young Change Agents.

The Academy for Enterprising Girls is an organisation designed to inspire and prepare girls for the future of the workforce. This learning experience has been co-designed with experts and students to meet the needs of Australian girls and our local industries and it aims to ensure young women are equipped for jobs of the future, in non-traditional growth industries such as technology and engineering, where there are increasing opportunities but unfortunately where women are greatly under-represented.

During the full day workshop students were provided with opportunities to think like an entrepreneur, how to spark an idea and test its viability, and what they needed to do to turn that idea into reality. The skills that were introduced on the day enabled students to think creatively and work collaboratively with others.

Students worked to identify problems in their community and create a vision for the future they want to create. Students worked through the following Design Thinking Process:

The following ideas were prototyped and presented to the group:

  • An electronic bracelet designed for young women with options to send the user's location to other females in the network and the local police.
  • The Women And Men (WAM) Festival, an event with sport, arts, culture, food and performance that educates and advocates for gender equality.
  • A TED Talk series in which academically advanced students deliver talks to their peers on a range of different topics, developing skills in research, public speaking and initiative.
  • An app funded through a small subscription fee that produces content for women, including health advice, profiles of inspirational women, sport and an anonymous chat service.
  • A clothing store designed by teenagers for teenagers, stocking ethically produced clothing that caters to all shapes and sizes.
  • A pay-for-hire scheme, where students can pay a small amount of money to use sporting facilities in the school for leisure and competitions at lunch time.
  • A jewellery line of school-approved designs that can be worn by students at school, allowing them to better express themselves while adhering to school dress codes.
  • A program that brings young speakers to schools to discuss their experiences of mental health and offer personal advice.
  • A new range of sustainable sporting uniforms designed for young women by young women.
  • A roadshow that travels to schools to engage students in educational and immersive activities that educate them on environmental issues.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

We value the opportunity to partner with families in the education of their daughters. One such opportunity to connect is through the participation in parent/teacher interviews. The girls are encouraged to attend and engage in conversation regarding their learning. These parent/teacher interviews will be held online via Microsoft Teams, with details regarding the interviews being emailed early next week.

Save the dates:

  • Wednesday 24 March - 2.45pm to 8.00pm
  • Friday 26 March -  9.00am to 4.00pm
