Year 9 Myself Program

Year 9 MyCity

The two MyCity classes had their first excursion for Term 1 to The O’Brien IceHouse in the Docklands. The organising groups were a little nervous navigating us to the Docklands, an area of the city that was new to most of the students.

Students were very nervous to try ice skating, some for the first time. Students showed great resilience as they tried this new activity. During the session, students built their skills and developed their confidence. It was great to see the enjoyment, fun and excitement that we all had as we approached this activity. Ms Zhang became our official photographer as she tried to take action shots of the students as they glided on the ice. It looks so easy when you are watching from the sidelines but it was not as easy as it seems. After the ice-skating, we all enjoyed a well-deserved lunch and a look around the District, previously known as Harbour Town. Students made us proud as they consistently upheld our school values by demonstrating the following: Public transport etiquette, respect for members of the public, consideration for the groups leading and peers. What a great start to Term 1.

STUDENT REFLECTION

During the second MyCity class, my group researched and chose an enjoyable and suitable location for our MyCity class to visit. We made a brochure detailing the history, location and directions to O’Brien Icehouse.

On the day of the excursion, our class met at the front office, as instructed. We assembled, wrote our phone numbers down on the list and then departed. After about forty-five minutes on public transport, we arrived at the O’Brien Icehouse. Our teachers checked our group in, whilst we dropped our bags off at the seating area, collected our skates.  Then we proceeded to head out onto the ice and the fun began. We skated for approximately an hour, after which we returned our skates and departed O’Brien Icehouse.

We then made our way to the neighbouring District Docklands shopping centre, where we all had lunch. We were given an hour to have lunch and explore the Docklands. My friends and I had Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Subway, which we all undeniably enjoyed.

Upon completion of our indulgent lunch and Dockland’s exploration, we gathered at the agreed meeting point, then walked as a group to the tram stop and boarded the next tram. We transferred to the bus after a couple of stops on the tram, staying on Doncaster road. We walked the rest of the way back to school, arriving just as the school bell went.  What perfect timing and a great end to the day.
It was quite stressful to have the pressure of planning and coordinating the whole outing. We had to decide on a venue, determine to schedule, book the outing and even prepared an information brochure. I am proud to say that everyone had an awesome time ice skating and exploring new parts of our great city of Melbourne. It was a successful adventure.

Our group ran the first excursion. We were a little scared at first as it was our classes first time out, we managed to get there on time and back. Ice skating was super fun and we progressed even though we only had an hour and a half. Then we went over to the District Docklands where everyone split off and chose their lunch. Overall it was a really fun day and we all enjoyed it.
