Lunar New year Celebrations

According to lunisolar calendars, February 12, 2021, is the Lunar New Year traditional for many Asian countries including China, Cambodia, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Burma as well as Vietnam. People who are interested in Chinese zodiac signs might already know that this is the celebration to say goodbye to the year of Rat and welcome the arrival of the year of Ox.

People around the world would mark this special occasion to celebrate the festival with family and friends to enjoy food and drinks at home. Given everyone celebrates this event with their love ones, Doncaster Secondary College is also keen to celebrate the Lunar New Year with our international students at school. So International Team and Assistant Principals have organized this to happen in the Library on Wednesday, 24 February with the crowds of our international students.

Students gathered and enjoyed the celebration together including a music performance on the Guzheng, which is a Chinese traditional instrument. The great performer of the Guzheng is our Year-8 international student, Jaihang, who has been practising this instrument for 5 years and the song is called “Waters of Bliss to my Village” to recall people’s past suffering and express people’s joy now. After the blow-away music finished, everyone had the opportunity to learn to say “Happy Lunar New Year” in 8 different languages. On traditional Lunar Near Year practice, we have arranged gift bags for all our international students to bless them good luck and be in health. At Doncaster Secondary College, we always care, and this event is not to be missed and very important to make our students feel that they belong to the college, but likewise, we are very pleased to also become part of their culture.

I was very excited but also a little nervous as well because it was such a fortune for me to be able to contribute to the activity but it was also the first time that I could be a part of hosting an activity for international students. Being a host for the Luna New Year activity is a great chance for me to be more confident and improve my oral speech skill.

I’m really happy to celebrate Lunar New Year with all the International students. The whole event was full of friendly atmosphere, I really like the couplet, lantern, and the gift beg. On this special New Year, although I could not return to my motherland to reunite with my relatives, celebrating with everyone here makes me feel very warm. Thank the International student team for giving me this opportunity to perform Guzheng. Wish everyone have a great year!

Lunar New Year 2021 is a really special year with the current pandemic. It was the first year I had Lunar New Year without my family. However, I am so grateful that my second family-the international supporting team to hold a special event for us. It was an amazing experience that I think I will keep with me for the rest of my life. Thank the international student team to holding this event and I am looking forward to participating in future events.
