Hi everyone,

It’s been so lovely to see children re-adjust after our mini-lockdown in Victoria. It feels like it’s time to get into term 1 with gusto, and keep our optimism high – and our hands clean!

Last week I wrote about the birds of Kalinda, and I am busily creating a poster with some students to celebrate the birds (good, bad and ugly) that can be found in our grounds.

This week, I’ll be looking at the WEEDS of Kalinda! Our grounds are situated in a corridor that joins the Urban Forest and Mullum Mullum Creek. The more we plant local and native plants, the more habitat we can create for migrating birds, mammals, insects and reptiles as they search the region for water, food and shelter.

So, you may see me around the grounds, with our gorgeous students, removing some plants that LOOK native and pretty, but are actually invasive species. You can read more about local weeds here: https://www.maroondah.vic.gov.au/Residents-property/Trees-vegetation-and-weeds/Environmental-weeds

Happy weeding! And may hands-on activities build our well being a little bit every day.

Emily is at Kalinda on Mondays and Thursdays for 2021.
