Week 7 & 8 Snapshot

Welcome to Grade 4!

The Grade 4 students have once again settled back into learning at class. They have done a great job of readjusting! Please find below an outline of the learning for Week 7 and 8.

English

Students are continuing to work on developing their reading stamina and engagement. Students have learnt multiple strategies for finding just right books, staying engaged as they read and identify their thinking. Over the next week students will practice applying these strategies independently before moving onto a new unit focusing on reading with fluency and expression.

Students have been busy writing many different pieces for their first unit of writing. Students have been focusing on working through the writing cycle and recognising the different traits of good writing - such as organising their ideas, having a clear mood and using correct conventions. Over the next two weeks they will choose a piece of writing to publish and finish our first unit of study with a writing celebration.

Students will then begin their new unit of writing, which will focus on creating simple, compound and complex sentences to create a flow and rhythm.

Mathematics

As students are finishing learning more explicitly about place value they are applying their knowledge to rounding and addition. Students will practice their mental maths strategies such as finding ten pairs, doubles, near doubles and looking for 'friendly numbers.'

Students will then explore different ways to add 3 digit and larger numbers, with a focus on developing their conceptual understanding and explaining their thinking.

Unit of Inquiry

Students are finishing their unit of inquiry on wellbeing. Students have been practicing applying the strategies they have learnt about managing their wellbeing.

Students will then begin their next unit of inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves, as they explore the central idea 'Technology creates opportunities.'

Over the next several weeks they will explore the lines of inquiry:

  • How technology transforms the world we live in
  • How being curious with technology helps us to solve problems
  • How our use of technology can impact self and others

Wellbeing

Classes are continuing to use circles and philosophical inquiries to support students wellbeing.

Homework

Homework has been sent out on Seesaw for Week 6 and 7. Students need to complete the expected tasks over the two weeks which include reading, maths and word study and record their homework in their planner. Students may also complete the optional tasks. Homework is due Friday, March 12th

Swimming

Swimming for Grade 4 will begin in Week 8 and continue into Week 9.

We encourage students to wear their bathers under their clothes to school on swimming days and make sure to bring a change of clothes (especially underwear!) in their bags. Students also need towels, googles and house swim caps.
