Mr Liam Beatty
Yesterday we celebrated International Women’s Day. On behalf of the boys in the Primary School, I would like to extend a big thank you to all the wonderful women in their lives. As a Marist school, our dedication to Mary our Good Mother is something we hold dear. As such, it is our wish that the Primary boys grow into men who understand the vital role that women play in their lives. As we begin Week 7, I would like to share with you some special quotes from three amazing women of faith.
“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love”
Mother Teresa
“Never see a need without doing something about it”
St Mary Mackillop
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word”
Mary our Good Mother (Luke 1:38)
This Friday the College will hold its annual Lenten Fund Day. For a $2 donation, boys are invited to wear free dress (please ensure enclosed shoes and a hat). There will also be a variety of food stalls and games available for students through both monitor and cash payments. For more information, please see the Mission section of this newsletter.
As part of our commitment to go and help this Lent, we are inviting our Primary families to donate various chocolates that will be collected into hampers and raffled off to raise money for Marist Solidarity, Caritas Australia and Catholic Mission. We ask that all donations are sent to the Primary Reception by Friday, 12 March. Raffle tickets will then be sold in the lead up to the end of Term 1, with the draw to take place in Week 10.
Well done to all the boys who gave up their time to participate in Clean Up Australia Day on Friday afternoon. The boys cleaned the creek next to the school and sorted the rubbish into the appropriate bins. A big thank you to Kathryn Badini and the Environmental Group for leading this initiative.
Primary students have received many reminders about the importance of wearing their full school uniform. Students have been reminded that it is their responsibility to have their hat each day and pack all items of their uniform if they are participating in before or after school activities.
It is fantastic to see our Year 5 students engaged in the ‘Drop Everything and Write’ initiative that commenced this term. In the lead up to first break, students stop work and write continuously for 10 minutes while being provided with feedback from various teachers from across the College. For the rest of the term, they will also participate in small writing groups from across the cohort that will target particular areas of development for each group.
This Friday afternoon I look forward to joining Mr Connolly, Mrs McLean and the Year 6 students who have expressed an interest in nominating for a Primary Student Leader position this year. The afternoon will focus on the qualities of Marist leadership and the expectations of leaders in the College. Please note that interested students would have received an email from Mr Connolly last Friday.
Marist has been invited to participate in an interschool debating and public speaking competition at St Laurence’s College in Term 2. The competition will run fortnightly from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm. There will be two (2) Year 6 teams for Debating and ten (10) Year 5 boys for Public Speaking. Any students interested will need to be committed to lunchtime meetings and preparation at home for three debates or presentations. More information will be given in Term 2. An expression of interest form can be completed here. Students who have any questions can see Mrs Garton (Public Speaking) or Miss Brown (Debating).
