Junior School Report
Junior School News
The end of Term 1 2023 has certainly arrived at a fast pace! Our Junior School students are to be congratulated for immersing themselves in the many facets of learning and growing at Scoresby Secondary College.
Our classrooms have had our students focused on discussion, learning, hands-on activities, group work and individual work, creativity and much more. Students eagerly signed up for interschool sports and many had the opportunity to participate in programs such as the ABCN, (Australian Business and Community Network).
The workshops delivered to our students by Elevate Education, were informative, insightful and helped our students focus on strategies to support their learning.
Year 7 students were introduced to three core study skills: dynamic reading, note-taking, and conceptual learning. Students should be reviewing their learning and applying skills such as;
- Making note of headings, sub-headings, diagrams and pictures to extract succinct information.
- Write down ‘trigger words’ to increase the breadth of their vocabulary and to ‘jolt’ one’s memory of the wider context.
- Construct ‘mind maps’ to connect ideas and concepts together.
- Extract and focus on the main key points and the supporting evidence.
Year 8 students focussed on the importance of a realistic weekly study planner/timetable. Students should;
- Identify their weekly revision and study commitments, then
- Identify their weekly afterschool commitments, then
- Create a weekly planner incorporating all of the activities, ticking then off as each one is achieved.
The purpose of a weekly timetable is to ensure students are continuously updating their commitments to keep the timetable realistic and achievable.
Year 9 students were shown a range of skills to boost their ability to memorise and recall information. These included strategies to minimise distractions at home, the mnemonic peg-word method, as well as the mental journey method.
- Create a list of rhyme words and link the rhyme words to words you may struggle to remember, by creating a vivid mental image.
- Eliminate distractions – Background noise, visual distractions - during study, homework and revision.
- Have good lighting conditions in your study area.
- Visual Journey Method – link a list of things you need to remember to outlandish mental images which occur in a familiar environment then, create a mental event that takes place in the environment to help piece together long lists of content.
Our Junior School students are encouraged to constantly apply these skills to support their learning growth.
Hands down, the highlight of Term 1 would be the Year 7 camp to Camp Rumbug! Approximately 2 hours away from home, in Foster North, our students developed strong friendships, discovered their strengths and hidden skills, overcame fear of heights and really, just had a great time! From flying foxes to mud runs and giant swings, our Year 7 students will have made memories to last and last. Our thanks to Mr Donovan Lawrence, Mrs Emily Bartlett, Mr Rodney Triegaardt and Ms Caroline Huynh for their time, support and care of our students.
I also extend my congratulations to Mr Rodney Triegaardt on his newly appointed role as the Year 8 coordinator. Mr Triegaardt’ s quiet strength in caring for, organising and supporting our students is most appreciated.
I appreciate and celebrate the endeavours and dedication of our Junior School Team for their constant support of our students.
As the end of Trm 1 approaches, the Junior School coordinators would like to acknowledge all Junior School students for the growth shown in their learning and achievements. We remind all students that the Winter Uniform will be worn as of the beginning of term 2.
Our best wishes to all students, their families and the Scoresby Secondary College community, for a safe and restful term 1 break.
