Foundation Report

What a big first term it has been for our new Foundation students at Aberfeldie Primary. We have been so impressed with how well they have settled into school life, including learning, and remembering daily routines, following our positive behaviour expectations and showing our school values.

Our new explicit and systematic phonics and spelling program UFLI is in full swing, and students are doing a great job at remembering new sounds and blending them together to read short words. Students have been practising this every day and we can see that their confidence is really growing.

In our Literacy block we have moved from reciting rhymes, to learning about some well-known fables and their morals, as well as unpacking some unknown vocabulary from these stories. Students have also recently begun to look at the structure of a sentence and the difference between a picture, letter, word, and sentence.

In Mathematics, students have been focussing on breaking down the numbers to 10 into their parts to help get a better understanding of a number. You might hear your child refer to this as part, part, whole. This understanding is an essential building block for future number work such as addition and subtraction. We have also been creating our own number lines, focussing on which numbers come before and after, and evenly spacing the numbers.

Our Inquiry unit has had students thinking and talking about friendships. We have investigated what makes a good friend, why sharing and listening are important, and how we can solve friendship problems both in the classroom and in the playground. Foundation students have made books with their 3/4 buddies, showing what a good friend does.
