SES pilot student program

Essendon Unit

The Essendon Unit of the Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) has been providing a volunteer emergency service to the Moonee Valley community since 1980.

The SES is responsible for providing emergency services in response to natural hazards, including storms, floods, landslides, earthquakes and tsunamis. Whilst our primary responsibilities are to provide support to the community in times of emergency, we are also active in working with members of our community to reduce the risks that are posed by these natural hazards.

We are currently developing a pilot program for children aged 9 – 12 years, to introduce them to the natural hazards that the SES is responsible for providing emergency responses to, and to teach them what they can do around their homes that will reduce the risks of damage from those hazards.

The program will run over 8 weeks and will require participants to attend 1 evening session per week during that time. The sessions will be held at the Essendon SES Unit headquarters in Rutherford St Aberfeldie from 7.00pm – 8.30 pm on Tuesday evenings.

There is no cost for participating in the pilot, however places are limited to 8 students.

It is anticipated that the program will commence in Term 2 – May 2nd 2023.

Parents of children participating in the program are welcome to wait at the Essendon SES Unit headquarters whilst their children are attending the sessions.

If you would like your child to participate in this program, please contact Brian Lynch via email brikarlynch@optusnet.com.au providing your contact details, the name and age of your child.

We will then contact you and provide you with additional information about the program.
