SACSA Swimming Carnival

Tuesday 7 March saw eleven of Endeavour’s greatest swimmers’ head to the SACSA Swimming Carnival at the North Adelaide Aquatics Centre.

It was great for all to experience 18 schools in direct competition, from Under 11s to Open Boys and Girls. Our crew of eleven started out strong, with Stephanie Hansen breaking the record for the 100m Open Girls’ event, posting an impressive 1:03.67. which was nearly 4 seconds faster than the previous time.

Stephanie went on to break three records for the day, adding 50m Butterfly and 50m Breaststroke. Lilly Kumela swam incredibly close to a new record, only missing by 0.01 of a second! Bridget Hansen swam a very impressive freestyle to secure first place in her race.

The highlight of the day was our Open Girls Relay team and their outstanding achievement  of finishing the event almost a lap in front of their nearest rival!

Our swimmers wore the Endeavour swimming cap with pride and represented the College to such a high standard. We placed in the top 3 for 12 of the 23 events we were entered into and finished up  in12th place overall for the day.

Stage 2 Basic Skills Kayaking Excursion

On Wednesday 8 March, both Stage 2 Outdoor Education classes engaged in their first offsite practical activity in West Lakes in preparation for their kayaking camps later this year. The day involved the students learning and practicing a variety of paddling skills which resulted in all students successfully being awarded their Basic Skills Kayaking Certification. The day finished with students practicing capsizing and rescuing each other. This activity started with a bit of reluctance and fear, but ended being lots of fun!

Besides competent kayaking skills, all students demonstrated exceptional teamwork, supported one another and respected the environment and equipment. We anticipate that this group of Stage 2 (Year 11) students will have a multitude of success together as a group throughout the year.

Music Camp

On Thursday 9 to Friday 10 March, 42 Music students attended the annual Music Camp. The camp was held at the West Beach Caravan Park, with rehearsals taking place across the road in the club rooms of Sport SA and Lacrosse SA. Four ensembles attended the camp: the Show Band, Big Band, Rock Band and Years 10 Band. Most of the students were in Year 10-12, with a few enthusiastic Year 8s and 9s also attending.

The camp allowed students to undertake two intensive days of rehearsals and individual practice sessions. Students also took part in other fun activities, such as free time at the beach and pool, and an entertaining quiz night run by the two Year 12 Music Leaders, Lacey Hitchenor and Jemma Gardner. Students really enjoyed the experience of staying overnight in the cabins this year.

Each ensemble was able to make a great deal of progress throughout the two days and performed to each other at a finale concert which concluded the camp.

Students are working towards the upcoming Cabaret Night, which will take place on Friday May 26th. The Show Band and Rock Band will also be performing at the 25th Anniversary Fair this Sunday, so please come along and watch them!

Year 12 Business Excursion: Wotton’s Cherries and Family Wines

Last week, the Year 12 Business Innovation class was fortunate to travel to Uraidla in the Adelaide Hills to tour a 6th generation family business. The business is renowned for its high-quality cherries and vineyard, producing grapes for both local wine makers and their own wine label. It is rare for students to have the opportunity to see such a diverse horticultural business, so it was a unique and enlightening experience for the Year 12s. The business recently expanded by opening a new cellar door, so learning about this process was also very useful.

Grant Wotton generously gave his time to talk to the students about the key operations and innovative practices and answered their questions. The excursion provided the basis for the next SACE assessment task and the experience has helped students to apply their knowledge. Few business owners are willing to give up their time and to share their wisdom and experience, so we are extremely grateful.

Many thanks to Grant Wotton and family.

Service Day at Ingle Farm Family Zone

Following on from the last edition of the Anchor, Ingle Farm Family Zone wanted to share with our community, and the students who supported them, their gratitude. Here is photo of the artwork on display in the entrance of the centre, artwork that they helped create on their visit.

"I really enjoyed painting the canvas’ at the end of the day, as a way to express a memory of what we had done throughout the day, as well as a way to decorate the family zone and make the place seem more cosy" - Cailin

"It was great being able to see the English lesson in progress because it really gave you an idea of what it is like to have to move to a different country and not know the language or how things like the school system works.

I loved that we were able to help explain a few things and answer some questions" - Edith

"As a group, we had enjoyed making sandwiches for the students, especially after learning about how some students do not eat at all throughout the day. We were able to make many different types of sandwiches, even a selection for those that have allergies. I am happy that the sandwiches will be given out during break times for kids to enjoy, and hopefully give them the energy and nutrition needed for their bodies" - Mai
