Grade 1/2 and Grade 2/3 Italian

This week In Italian the grade one, two and three students participated in a unit of work based on the topic ‘Easter’ through the story ‘La Colomba’ (the dove), which focuses on the tradition that the dove is a symbol of peace at Easter. It is embodied in the traditional Italian sweet Easter cake, “La Colomba”. Many Italo-Australian families take a Colomba cake as a gift when they visit friends and relatives. Students were encouraged to use language related to this topic through readings, chants and songs. They learnt how to wish each other Happy Easter in Italian - Buona Pasqua. We also had a taste testing opportunity and most students found the cake “deliziosa!”

Buona Pasqua a tutti.

Year 4 Girls Mercy College Excursion

Mercy College Experience! by Gail

Yesterday the Y4s had an excursion to Mercy College with our principal Mark. Our transportation was a mini bus.

Once we got there the bus driver waved goodbye and we went inside. Then some college girls gave all of us some badges with our school name and our names and our colour teams for the day. Mine was blue. I was lucky because blue is my favourite colour.

Once we knew our colours we had to wait for other schools to arrive! They all came and our first class was learning how high schoolers do music with Mr. Stu. It was really fun! After that we had a snack and saw our old friend Areesh. To finish off the day we had art with Miss Lavender, and dance with Miss Balandar.

The end of the day came and it was time to say bye to everyone, then we hopped on the mini bus and went back to school!

Grade 4 Girls Visit Saint Mercy College.   By Isabella

The excursion at Mercy College was amazing! We got there by minibus with Mark, our principal! We first got coloured badges then got separated into coloured groups. Then we did different activities, like drama, dance, music, P.E.(Physical Education) and cooking! I was in the orange group, with many other grade 4 girls! There was orange, purple, yellow, blue, red and green!

I first did drama, then we all had recess, and Mercy College gave us muffins, fruit and water. Then I had P.E. and Art and we drew little monsters out of water colors. For lunch, we had sausages on white bread. When we got back to school, I was super excited to tell all my friends about the trip!

Mercy College Excursion. By Aleisha

Last Wednesday, The year 4s from Sacred Heart Primary School visited  Mercy College. The year 4s had 3 activities to do and had an experience of what it would be like if we went to Mercy College.

We went in a mini bus. Once we got there we went to McAuley hall, where we got badges that had our names on it and our school. The badges had a color at the bottom, my color was purple and I was with Allie, and we had to go to the color coded seats. Then we had an assembly. After the assembly we had our first activity.  My first activity of the day was dance. Our dance teacher was Mrs. Lelonna . It was soooo much fun, we learnt the cha cha cha and the nutbush. After that it was recess and we got a muffin and an apple. I was super excited because I got to see Isabella, Gail, Tiffany, Katelin, Jasmine and Lauren.

After recess we had drama with Mrs. Balandar and she was so nice. We played this game called, ‘’Storm, Shelter and Person!’’ How you play the game is, Mrs. Balander would call out something, if she said storm, you would run around, if she said shelter two people would put their hands together and a person would go under them, and if she said person the people under the shelter would have to swap. After that we played this game where we had to think of an Adjective that starts with the same letter of our name and that’s not all, we had to think of an action for the adjective. Mine was active Aleisha just like Allie’s one.

After drama we had cooking tech with Mrs. Kiki, we made these delicious Jam drops with these simple steps. First you cut the bread into even pieces, then roll them into round shaped balls, after that you have to poke your thumb into the bread and add some jam into the hole of the bread, make sure you just put a little so it doesn’t overcook. Then put it in the oven, and there you go you have Jam drops.

After cooking tech we had lunch, and guess what, we got hotdogs for lunch and I had 3 and a half hotdogs. After I ate my hotdog's me, Gail, Isabella, Katelin, Tiffany, Lauren, Jasmine and Allie asked Mark if he could play the Nutbush music, so we could dance to it. Mark said yes, if we met the principal of Mercy College, and of course we said yes. We were so excited for the Nutbush, the principal of Mercy was actually really nice and she also knew the Nutbush and was really good at it.

Then it was time and we had had so much fun. It was time to leave and we had soo much fun on the ride back just talking about funny stuff.

Going to Mercy College. by Tiffany

At Mercy College we got name tags and we were sorted into groups, there was green, red, orange, yellow, purple and blue. I was in the blue group and I had music. We played the drums and 2 other instruments.

At snack time we ate muffins and apples and they were so good. They have a netball court and tennis court, we played for 15 min.

Then we had art. In art we had to make monsters, I made a frog monster under the stars with a pink and white dress and I made a friend.

At drama class we did a game called Wind, Shelter, Storm and in the 1st round I won, in the 2nd, I lost. Then we had to say our name, after which we had to fill in a sheet and on the sheet we had to see who got the most things.

Then we had lunch, we had hotdogs, and I ate 2. We played for 10 min. Then we went to the hall and we got ice cream and we asked questions about the school. When the assembly finished we went outside and got notebooks.

We hopped on the minibus and went back to school.

MY EXCURSION TO MERCY COLLEGE!

By Allie (Students Report)

Last Wednesday, the year four girls went to Mercy College with 12 other schools, and we got to try one day, being a Mercy College student.

We went in a minibus, and when we arrived at McAuley Hall we got split up into groups of color. I'm in purple with Aleisha and there was Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple group.

Our first activity was Dance, we danced the cha cha cha with the other school students and the Nutbush, it was pretty fun. Then we have recess and the school gave the visitors muffins and apples. The muffin was very good but the apple is not that good, we also saw Areesh an old student from our school.

Next we did Drama and we met Mrs Balandar and she told us to think of 1 verb and 1 noun that started with the first letter in our name and then we played ‘Thunder and Storm.’ It’s a game that 2 person have to make a shelter and one person has to get at the bottom, when she called 'Thunder' and run when she called 'Storm'. Our next game was similar to that she going to called out a number and a thing so you needed to make it with your number of people. The last game was we needed to walk in a way that she said, like walk like a zombie.

Then we did cooking, we made Jam Drops which is really easy because the dough was already done because we didn't have time to make it.

The last thing we did was have Lunch. We've got to eat hotdogs and I had 2, but Isabella had 5 hot dogs! When we finished lunch we went back to McAuley Hall to get an icy pole and I got my Jam Drops and we asked questions about the school. We also got a free notebook and we went back to the school!

Yesterday, Year 4 girls got a chance to go to Mercy College in Coburg.

By Lauren and Jasmine

When we first arrived we got to go in rainbow groups and the school captains at Mercy College welcomed and introduced us to other schools in different suburbs that we might not know. The colours of the groups were red, orange, yellow, green, blue and my most favourite color was purple!!

Each of the groups had 3 activities, like science, cooking and more that we don’t have in Primary School. I was in the yellow group with lots of different kids from other schools and Jasmine was with me too.

First the yellow group was doing science. The first step of our experiment was to put some water in the petri dish then we put M&Ms, and we put one sugar cube in to make the colour dissolve.

Next we were doing music. We all had to pick an instrument, when the teacher played an instrument, our instrument had to make the same beat. After music we did some dancing, we did two dances which were called the Cha Cha  Cha dance and the Nutbush. We danced for about 10-20 mins. At the end of our dance we all had lunch all together and we all had free hotdogs and chocolate muffins. After lunch we had free icy poles and some students were asking some questions about Mercy college.

HARMONY DAY

"The thing that impressed me the most about Harmony Day was how proud both our senior students and parents were in representing their country and their culture through their dress. It made me proud being the Year 5/6 teacher when it was evident that students had put in a great amount of thought and effort."  Marty Yr 5/6 Teacher

'We celebrated Harmony Day because myself, Hansvi and Kate wanted everyone to be proud of their cultures/heritage. It was great because everyone made an effort to dress up in their country's traditional clothes'.  Sheen Sharma  Social Justice Captain

After the parade we went inside and talked about the many languages we speak...here's just a few ways of saying 'hello'.

Yash Dev ~ Year 6

The day before Harmony Day I thought of what to wear. I came up with my decision to wear my cultural dress from India (coota pajama) . It had buttons on the top and on the sleeve. The day was Harmony Day and I  wore my cultural dress from India. It was magnificent, with a great shine like the shiniest gold. I took a glimpse of what astonishing dresses I could see.

Full of glorious and exquisiteness, the whole school did a parade which was very entertaining. After that we went to the Peace Garden. I liked it a lot because of how it looks. It was as beautiful as a princess and we took great photos together.

Lastly, we did a crossword which was extremely hard to do. It was super whopper duper challenging. In conclusion, I think Harmony Day is a very important day to celebrate because you can show others what culture you're from.

Amelia Kazsubska ~ Year 6

I think Harmony Day was a success because everyone took pride in wearing something cultural and showed that they cared. Best of all, I got to show who i am.

Ethan McLeay ~ Year

Yesterday, our school community celebrated Harmony Day to represent our many cultures and to showcase where we come from.

Firstly, the parade. It was fascinating to see everyone wearing great clothes. I felt like I was in Vietnam, wearing my white t-shirt and black pants.

After that we went inside to start the day. Marty, our teacher, had asked the whole class to say ‘hello’ in their language. I forgot how to say hello in Vietnamese, so I was really nervous, but then I remembered and didn’t stress out forgetting.

In conclusion, it was a great day, all about celebrating our differences.

All monies raised will go to communities abroad to assist them in a range of ventures. All our students from Foundation to Year 6 are living the story of the Good Samaritan....what can I do for others?
