2022 Chess State Finals (Mixed Competition)

Raidyn Cafe (Year 9), Sean McKenzie (Year 11), Thomas Mitchell (Year 11), Owen Parris (Year 11) and Juztyn Starc (Year 9) represented Brunswick Secondary College at the 2022 Chess State Finals recently, alongside over 160 school students from across the state.

In competition, the team scores are based on the top 4 players individual scores. Each player has 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move to win the game. If a player runs out of time, they lose. Luckily each player has 8 games to prove themselves.

BSC started the tournament well with all players getting at least one win, and four of them coming away with two wins! Having earned 8 points, we were in the hunt for victory - but more wins brings tougher opponents and so the dreaded Third Roundarrived. None of the BSC students won a game in Round 3, but we did achieve one draw.

There was some debate in Round 3 about the increased use of the Queens Gambit as a starter at the tournament. The Queens Gambit is when the white player moves forward the Queens pawn and the one next too in a seemingly defenseless manner.

Don’t fall for it - it’s a trap!

Our players fought valiantly and many a pawn was sacrificed. Our best player on the day was Juztyn Starc (Year 11)  with 6 wins, finishing 16th in the state.

BSC finished in sixth place out of 36 - above Preston High School, Coburg Secondary College and Xavier College. The tournament was won by Nossal High School.
