Taking care of the land

Aboriginal people have a special way of taking care of the land. Over tens of thousands of years they have developed a system for protecting, maintaining and enhancing healthy and diverse ecosystems, productive landscapes and other cultural values.

Today traditional methods are assisted by modern technologies such as helicopters and satellites. Activities include water management, harvesting of food and controlled burns.

They used controlled burning to reduce the intensity and impact of bushfires. Controlled fires were commonly used in the north of Australia. Today there are many programs exploring the relationship between Indigenous fire management and natural disaster resilience.
