Jemma: I am proud to say that 2022 has been yet another successful year for sport at Mount Alvernia College with our teams excelling at Wednesday afternoon sports as well as at CaSSSA Carnivals.

When assuming the role as Sport Captain at the beginning of this year, my vision was to continue the enthusiasm injected throughout the college in 2021, as well as encourage my peers and individual Sports Captains to commit to teams acting as strong role models, particularly for younger students. I cannot thank the staff at Mount Alvernia College enough, as well as my fellow students who gifted me with the opportunity to lead this year.

As my time as Sport Captain comes to an end, I am very pleased to introduce Sophia Papantoniou who will be taking over the role in 2023. In order to get to know Sophia, please take the time to read a short interview we conducted during our meeting last week.

Interview with Jemma and Sophia

Jemma: I’m sure everyone would like to learn a bit more about you Sophia, do you mind telling us a little bit about yourself?

Sophia:  I consider myself to be a very passionate person in regard to the sporting community having spent most of my time growing up in sporting settings. This allowed me to explore a wide variety of sports ranging from swimming to gymnastics and have most likely tried any sport that comes to mind. In the end, I fell in love with hockey and now spend most of my time juggling school and my time on the hockey field.

Jemma: Why did you want to be Sports Captain and what is your vision for sport next year at the College?

Sophia: I wanted to be the 2023 Sports Captain as I saw it as an opportunity to work towards creating a more comfortable sporting environment. With the endeavour to encourage those holding back from participating in sports by minimising and helping students manage the pressures of competitive sporting environments.

Jemma: Why do you think sport is an important part of life at Mt Alvernia and why should students participate?

Sophia:  I believe sport acts a safe haven for many students and is a way to take a step back from reality and to focus on themselves within the physical activity. Along with sports providing students with a social network for students with common interests outside the classroom. This which would allow those who participate to establish new friendships and gain new perspectives of themselves.

Jemma: I hope that it has been beneficial getting to know Sophia, and I can confidently say that I am passing on the role of Sports Captain into very capable hands. As my time being a captain and writing newsletters comes to a close, it is only fitting that Sophia end this article as she very deservingly takes over my role and leads the college in sport from now and throughout 2023.

Sophia: Thank you Jemma, I am honoured and grateful to take upon this role and will be sure to continue the foundations you have set for the College’s sporting community during your time as the sports Captain.
