Cyber Security Seminar

The Moorabbin Police visited us on 11 and 13 October to educate our students about online safety. These sessions contained age-specific content from Years 3-11.

During these sessions the police spoke to all students about:

  • How to be safe and respectful when using social media.
  • How to protect their devices and what to do if they find themselves with an online issue.
  • The difference between knowing people online and knowing people offline.
  • There were a few case studies and examples of situations the students may find themselves in, even with their friends/boyfriends/girlfriends. This topic was specifically targeted towards each age group.
  • Older students were taught about more sensitive subjects such as grooming, appropriate imagery, image-based abuse and online sex offenders/predators.

Students learned critical thinking skills when interacting online. They were presented with ways to understand that not everyone is honest online and that sometimes they are not who they say they are.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and it is a great time for an annual reminder for all Australians to stay secure online. Please be aware of what your child is accessing online and know that we are vigilant with what our students have permission to access online at school.

If you have any questions about these seminars, please feel free to contact our Head of Well-being at rebecca.harvey@hcc.vic.edu.au
