Student Wellbeing 2019

We are continually building on our Student Wellbeing support by adding to the counselling programs for our young people.
Cheltenham Secondary College data across all year levels supports the concept of improved learning behaviours, motivation to learn, improved attendance and a decrease in student management issues are directly related to individual student wellbeing.
Acknowledging current research that identifies positive teacher/student relationships as integral to improved wellbeing and the learning and retention of students, the college recognises the need to introduce a program that builds wellbeing, resilience and specific skills required at the various stages of secondary school.
I would like to welcome on board 2 new people Maddy Dyson, a Youth Worker from the Les Twentyman Foundation - Positive Futures Program and Dave Goldsmith, Student Counsellor.
Maddy will be working 5 days a week with our students for the whole year.
Her role as the in-schools youth worker is to work with students and families to improve their connection to education, family, health, community and employment.
This involves goal setting to enable the student to reach their potential this can be done through one on one support as well group work programs.
Maddy is able to provide relief to teachers by supporting those students being identified as at risk , such as sitting in the classroom or having a 15 minute break outside of the classroom, with the end goal being the student returning to class with a positive and ready to learn attitude.
The positive futures objective is to re-engage at risk young people and strengthen their engagement with education.
Dave Goldsmith, a Student Counsellor, has worked with young people and youth programs for the last 15 years. While working he is also studying to complete a Masters Degree and is working here at the college with our young people one day a week.
