VET in schools (VETis)

The Sky’s the Limit for Wai Yan Moe !

VET in schools (VETis) programsgive senior secondary students opportunities to learn a range of skills in Certificates III, IV and Diploma courses. It also provides a chance to take on the additional responsibility of independent travel to and from a TAFE setting. The students love this extra responsibility and to venture out of the traditional classroom environment on a Wednesday afternoon in the pursuit of knowledge and skills that directly relate to their future career path.

In 2018, Cheltenham Secondary College was awarded the Applied Learning School of the Year;  Year 12 student Angeliki Tsafoulis was named Applied Learning Student of the Year; and Ms Nicole Coughlin was named VET Teacher of the Year. It was an extremely successful year for applied learning in our school.

This year, Cheltenham Secondary College would like to congratulate Wai Yan Moe (Moe) who has begun a VET course in Aviation. Moe successfully applied for a scholarship to Moorabbin Flying Services and is now following his dreams one Wednesday afternoon at a time. Moe is beyond excited about the future ahead and I have asked him to write a few words about his experience so far. In addition we would also like to acknowledge Moe’s leadership as an SRC member and his recent success in the Moorabbin Lions Club Youth of the Year competition, in which he took out the “Best Public Speaker” award.

 Wai Yan Moe

...I have been blessed with the opportunity to pursue my childhood dream whilst still in school and it couldn’t really get any better than this! I am currently studying a Diploma in Aviation at Moorabbin Flying Services that will hopefully lead to a jetsetting career.

Being on the receiving end of a scholarship from Moorabbin Flying Services was a real privilege and provided the kickstart I needed to strive for my personal best this year. I vividly remember the elation and the euphoric rush I felt after reading the email from Mrs Hargreaves, informing me that I had been chosen for the program.

Till this day, it astounds me that I am provided with this opportunity to pursue my career so early on in my life. Sure, it is not easy to juggle my VCE subjects with endless pages of theory whilst cramming in time weekend time to head into the air and fly but believe me, when you’re in the air, all your worries and stresses get left behind on the runway tarmac and it’s calm and peaceful. It’s considerably different and dare I say, harder to pilot an aircraft than drive a car... but once you get the hang of it, it becomes an extension of one’s body and an amazing experience.

Ultimately, this VET opportunity has shone a torch on a pathway that I see myself thoroughly enjoying. Furthermore, the process of actively working towards my goals knowing that in all certainty that my efforts will amount to my future self sitting in the cockpit whizzing across the Atlantic at 950km/h, makes life great! …”
