Senior School Debating and Public Speaking

Senior School Debating and Public Speaking
Senior School Debating and Public Speaking is in its final stages for the year at Staughton College.
We have completed four out of five rounds of senior school interschool debating for the Debaters Association of Victoria at our host school for the region, St. Bernard’s in Essendon.
Our round five competition will take place on Monday the 25th of July, and we encourage parents and guardians to come along to support students participating.
The scores for each grade are as follows:
Teams have been attending weekly meetings to prepare for their debates and public speaking competitions and should be proud of the efforts they have put in, especially those participating in debating and public speaking events for the first time.
Debating Captain Zac Geddes and Lauren Donaldson competed in the State Finals of the Rostrum Public Speaking Competition at St. Kevin’s College in Toorak on the 19th of June.
Zac and Lauren put in a fantastic effort at the competition completing both prepared and impromptu speeches. Zac spoke on the effects of artificial intelligence on the scientific community and Lauren discussed the dietary and ethical benefits of a vegan lifestyle.
Unfortunately Zac and Lauren did not get through to the National Final of Rostrum, but they should be incredibly proud of their efforts in the competition and in Debating and Public Speaking this year.
This term in Debating and Public Speaking, we will be showcasing our debating skills in a Staff vs. Student debate for Science Week and encourage students to come and watch and if they are interested, join up for Junior School Debating for late term 3 and term 4. More information about Junior School Debating and signups will be available in the next few weeks.
For more details/information regarding debating or public speaking or any of our upcoming events, please contact Ms. Clancy at the College.
