Grade One

General:

Grade 1 students have been interacting with their peers with increasing patience and collaboration in both the classroom setting and outdoor spaces. This has resulted in friendship circles expanding, students showing increasing willingness to play new games and practicing more active listening. With many exciting events taking place over the last few weeks, we have also had lots of fun with our special visitors during our Book Week celebration, and special visitor days. We are excited to finish Term 3 with our upcoming visit to LEGOLAND and our shadow puppet show!

Mathematics:

Over the past few weeks, students have engaged in many open-ended tasks that have combined multiple mathematical skills into different concepts. Students have been given many opportunities to extend their current understanding in the areas of Number, Place Value, Shape, Money and Division. In addition, there have been many cross-curricular connections throughout our units embedding our Integrated concept of sound. To immerse students in constructive mathematics, we have engaged with student driven STEM activities that allow their creative minds to make connections and optimize the LEGOLAND excursion.

English:

This term in English, students published their final information reports before moving on to the unit of Narratives. We started with a Book Week celebration of Dreaming with Eyes Open by immersing ourselves in Dreamtime Stories. Students made connections to a wide range of texts by reflecting upon their own cultures and experiences. The next few weeks saw the students exploring narratives by comparing and contrasting them to Dreamtime Stories. Students learnt about the orientation, language structure and descriptive features of narratives through various mentor texts and then creating their own. The integration of Literacy, Technology and Inquiry was made through the students’ collaborative creation of Shadow Puppet stories. Each student engaged themselves in making puppets, musical instruments and publishing stories which were then performed for an audience.

Integrated Studies & RRRR:

Grade 1 students have been exploring the sense of sound over the past few weeks in Integrated Studies. They have investigated how sound is made and how they can change the pitch and volume of different musical instruments. Students have also been learning about sound effects, and have started the design process of creating a musical instrument to make sound effects in their upcoming shadow puppet play.

In RRRR this term, students have been learning about positive relationships by investigating who and how they can ask for help, what fair play is, and how to create a friendly classroom environment.
