Major Projects

This week, 9 of our year 11 students submitted HSC major works for Design and Technology. This major work contributes 60% of their exam marks and is the culmination of a year's worth of work in this subject.  They are to be congratulated for their hard work and perserverence in developing their physical projects and an 80 page portfolio documenting their design process. A huge amount of work has gone into these projects during class time as well as outside of hours to deliver the highest quality work.

This class continued on to the HSC course from our year 10 cohort where every student studies preliminary design and technology to accrue 2 units of HSC while engaging in passion projects as part of life design.

The following projects were developed as part of this HSC subject:

Riley Bettiol To design a product that reduces back problems/pain for the homeless with cheap and efficient materials

Jonah Bercasio The general need for this project is to create a way to make use of the paper we consume instead of it going to waste while also providing opportunities for the less fortunate.

Diannella Cruz The brief for this project will be to allow those who are experiencing heart break to access an easily accessible solution which will help in supporting their getting over journey.

Malka Kaur The brief is to create a functional and comfortable face mask man’s docking station for people to wear to protect them from gems and contamination in their everyday lives.

Nihar Pujara  Design a solution to make it easier for anxious students to return post lockdown.

Denver Remo Innovate a solution for identity theft on the internet

Rudra Sahu The brief for this project is to help people be more organised and have more control over their lives. The final product will be something that people are able to use freely that best suits them in their workflow

Aesha Shah To create a solution where refugees are able to grow and have a brighter future

Bella Teuma-Manaog The brief is to design and produce a product that demonstrates how the architecture and artefacts of a space contributes to an understanding of the St Luke's Catholic Faith Community Vision

Year 9 Creativity and E-Commerce

The following presentations highlight some of the students’ entrepreneurial ideas that they continue to prototype this term. The prototyping process includes surveying potential customers and/or clients and using this data to inform their business’ next steps. Students have constructed Need to Knows relating to their unique business idea. These Need to Knows guide the students’ self-directed entrepreneurial journey throughout this course.

Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The students are eagerly preparing for their next overnight hike along the Central Coast in Week 10 of this term. We have been walking around Elara to build endurance for our 16km hike. The students have been busy completing their remaining hours outside of school in the areas of voluntary service, skills and physical recreation. Read about their adventures below - some of which are happening right in our community !

Weston, Isaiah A, Isaiah D, Caleb, Alex and Christopher have been providing cleaning services (pictured)  to Elara as part of their volunteer hours! The group started a neighbourhood car wash with the aim of assisting those in need.

Mikayla has also been helping our local neighbours in Elara by volunteering to walk dogs around the suburb. This is also part of her volunteer hours.

Arnav and Aryan have been cleaning up litter around Elara estate. The boys are doing this as part of their service to the community and only have a few hours to go.

Lara is the first student to finish ALL of her sections - an amazing achievement! Lara completed 26 hours of physical culture as part of her recreation, 13 hours of volunteering as a leader through YCS and 13 hours of art as part of her skill. Her assessors spoke highly of her dedication and how extensive her logs were.

Oliver has completed his hours of physical recreation through participation in his gym program! Ms Paz was his assessor and was able to affirm the hours of commitment he has shown to this. Oliver is part of the Bushcare Volunteer Program with Parramatta City Council as part of his service (pictured) and is committed to improving his cooking

skills in the kitchen.

Ahana is logging her participation in debating as part of her skill. She is also currently 18/26 hours for her voluntary service, which she completes at Blacktown City Library with her peers Alizey, Charvi and Noopur. Their supervisor speaks to their commitment and creativity. The staff have been able to use many of their ideas to inspire change in systems and processes in the library. The girls have even been entrusted with creating TikToks to promote the library!

Chloe and Gabi have been volunteering at St Vincent de Paul on Saturday’s. The girls work in a charity retail store to help the volunteers sort and organise the donations. It is great to see the students teaming up together to serve our community!

Ariel has completed ⅔ of her sections and is close to finishing! Her last few hours are dedicated to the band and improving her confidence when performing.

Shauna is making steady progress across all three sections of her Award. She has been assisting an elderly resident at their farm (pictured) as part of her volunteer service. This is her major section. Shauna is also to be commended on her participation in the rep soccer team as part of her physical recreation hours.

Aariz has one hour remaining of his voluntary service which is dedicated to animal conservation and habitat studies. Aariz carries out this service remotely through his participation in the Western Shield Project in W.A

Bhupen has been cooking, playing soccer and providing service to the school through his voluntary attendance at rep sport. Bhupen has been taking photos of the teams playing and has also started to clean the surrounding fields.

Cohen has had a slower start to the Award due to injury, however he has now started to work towards a clear goal of serving his basketball association by volunteering to officiate at games. He has also logged hours for physical recreation through regular walking and participation in basketball.

Year 11 PDHPE

The Year 11 PDHPE students have been studying First Aid as part of their coursework. This is the last topic in the preliminary course. In a couple of weeks, the students will attain their formal First Aid and CPR qualifications which will not only be valuable for their understanding of the syllabus content, but also transferable to real-life!. For now, we have been exploring different scenarios in class to assist us in identifying, managing and treating various injuries and medical conditions, remembering to always exercise commonsense over heroics.
