Celebrating Indonesian Independence Day
With the help of Charlotte and Jesse, our Languages Captains, we ran a traditional Indonesian game (Makan Keerupuk) at lunchtime last week (August 23) to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day (August 17).
“Kerupuk, a salty, savory snack…… [is] an item used in the well-known game Makan Kerupuk where the participants have to eat the kerupuk as fast as they can. This game holds great historical significance. During the colonial period, Indonesian soldiers were faced with scarcity of food. Eating rice with kerupuk was nothing less than a treat for them. Hence, Makan Kerupuk is a reminder for every Indonesian to be grateful for the freedom struggles of their ancestors.”
Our game had a bit of a twist in that, the kerupuk that we used were Indonesian potato chips (Mee Goreng flavour!) which students had to eat from chopsticks, without using their hands!!
Selamat berbahagia to Kaia Wynd (7G) who was clearly our champion!
